Have you tried it again since everything cleared up? And Does your inside blower work?

Yeah we do too, but they're in good hands. They have good friends on the mountain who have offered their services to help any way they can and they're pretty darn smart too. They've had rental properties including beach front so insurance claims are pretty familiar to them. I just wish we could be there to help then out.

Kids have a 2 hour delay tomorrow. I expect it to get icy tonight.

Not yet. There is still a good bit of ice down in the unit. It seems like the air was still kinda sort of heating, just not very well.

At least with this claim it'll be less hassle than dealing with ins claim after a hurricane. That shit is a nightmare usually.

Must be the inside blower I was thinking of. We replced both, inside and out.

How does the A/C unit make heat?

Runs in reverse that's how heat pumps work so instead of cold air going through the evaporator the evaporator turns into the condenser and is hot.

Ouch just looking at it looks like a construction or engineering f up with out the right beams to carry any snow load. It failed in the middle. That tells me something wasn't up to the load it got. Note I do structural steel and been in and around construction since I was knee high to a grasshopper

I was looking it up, so much to learn! We upgraded our upstairs blower unit, since it was too small- and larger outside units.

Yep. There is an art to HVAC also with # of runs, registers, sizing, etc. I have had to work with an HVAC engineering firm on a few projects and man I thought I knew quite a bit but what I knew wasn't even the tip of the iceberg.

An AC cools the house by removing heat from the air passing over the coils that are carrying the refrigerant, and the heat is expelled outside. For heating the unit reverses, and removes heat from the outside air and expells it inside. That's why the colder it is outside, the longer a heat pump has to run. And why they are not used in much colder climates than we have around here

    Makes sense... :notsure:

Does the heat pump (A/C unit) have stored heat somehow? My heater is on, been on all day, blowing warm air now. Both my A/C units have snow/ice on the blades. I have never seen this in action, but like to learn.

Nothing stored but you probably have aux heater strips in the blower unit that assist when it is real cold, or they may come on when the heat pump is in a defrost cycle. The heat strips are more costly to run.

You kinda sorta have the right idea. as far as transfer of heat across the condenser and evap. Here is where I disagree is that the system is solely based on being able to change a refrigerant from a gaseous state to a liquid state and that change in temp is where you get your heating and cooling affect. The temp of the air inside the home is most efficient when the system can run efficiently and get the refrigerant in and out of these states and the transfer of heat from the coils can be done well. If that makes sense. Reading it it sounds a little confusing.

this^^^^^^ Think of these heat strips as like a toaster oven or old school space heater with coils that heat up. This is also what kicks on when it switches to Emergency heat.
