Need new tires! I off road and I drive a ton.

Im still on stock off road tires, and thats exactly how i got stuck in mud a few days ago. I need new tires asap, but since I commute a ton i need to find a balance. I know my mpg will take a hit with any tire upgrade, but I dont want it to drop dramatically. Right now debating between 265/75/16 KO2's and Falken Wildpeak AT3W. Any suggestions or help on how they will do off road and with mpg? Would like to keep stock 16" rims, but i could go to a 17" rim if needed.

Honestly just pick one. I've run 4 sets of KbrO2's, my brother in running Toyo Open Country A/t's my Bro in Law is running Wildpeak AT's. All three have worked just fine, wear even, ride quiet ect.

My Bro in Law did score an amazing deal on the Wildpeaks though.

Edit: Also, if you switch to an LT slightly taller tire expect 2-3mpg loss.

 

Wildpeaks are only $120 each on Amazon right now vs. $180 for KO2's. 480 for a set vs 720 for a set!

 

Duratracs are great also. It’s basically what you think looks the best. Everyone will have their opinions on which one is best.

K02s won’t do much in mud. If you plan on going through more mud I’d suggest Duratracs or Cooper Maxx’s. I have the coopers and they ride smooth for daily driving and do well in dirt,snow,mud,etc.

 

Yep, I think that's where he got them. I actually ordered them for my T4R, but America's sold them to someone else so I settled on the KbrO2's they had in stock. They have been great. 275/70r17

 

I love my wildpeaks, but they aren't mud tires. If you are going to get muddy, buy some traction boards and be prepared. I use my traction boards once my AT3W's get stuck.

Also, I got sl rated tires and took no hit in mpg. Actually I have gotten my best mileage ever with the falkens. I have 265/70/17's. I have 26k miles on mine and they are holding up well. I highly recommend them.

 

KO2. No question if you drive off-road.

 

I had 265/70/17 KO2s. I was getting ~16-17.5 MPG. They really sucked in the mud though. After less than 10k miles, I replaced them with 295/70/17 Cooper STT Pros. Much better for my needs. I haven’t had to use my winch on myself yet. I get anywhere between 14-16 MPG with these.

If I were to get another all terrain tire, I think I’d go with Dutatracs. KO2s look cool and all, but I doubt I’ll ever buy them again.

 

Off-road you would really appreciate the 3 ply sidewall on the BFGs. The other tires have thin passenger car sidewalls that ride nice but offer very little protection from puncture.

 

K02 sucks in mud so that may have happened regardless. Great in sand and dirt though. Actually got stuck in some mud today. They just cake it all on and lose traction fast. I am on the hunt for my next tire. Been hearing alot of good things on the km3 but need to see how they perform out side of mud. id like one that has some ok wet conditions (rain/snow) but still be great on dirt etc. Mud is a tricky beast no matter the tire.

 

Cooper ST Maxx is the best all around tire you’ll find.

 

Most A/Ts suck in mud, the tread gets packed, won't clear and they become slicks. I'm a KO2 fan but I agree they were crap in mud. I think the STMaxx do better but still not great.

If mud is a primary concern, get an MT. Many mud terrains function well as mud tires and all terrain tires, the same can't be said for most ATs though.

 

The Dynapros ATM do not get the credit they deserve. Last year, I spent 10 days winter wheeling with a guy on Dynapros in an older Tacoma with no LSD, no locker, no lift, and he went everywhere with total confidence. His traction in all conditions was impressive, from a tire that is not obviously aggressive. Unlike the K02s, they are actually siped, which I am sure helped on ice and snow. They are also supposed to be long wearing.


I think when my K02s wear out I’m going to consider the Dynapros.

 

I like the duratrack in driving, snow, ice. They aren’t a true snow tire but they do good. Dunno about real off-roading.

 

I run Toyo's AT3's , great tire, good traction in most conditions....if you are a real off-roader... You'll need something better, these trucks don't usually see real rock and mud conditions.
