I would love to have this. Moved in to a newly constructed house a little over a year ago. Builder installed heat pump with aux heat being the heat strips :( last winter was a real b!tch

We have gas for out appliances, wondering why we don't have gas heat. He claimed that heat pumps were standard in our area (Rock Hill).

Do you have an emergency heat setting? EM heat uses a coil inside the heat exchanger inside/under the house and shuts off the heat pump. Mine is frozen up to. The fan inside is making a hell of a noise hitting the ice.

I don't know any elechickens down there but since there is that big warehouse down the rd from you I wonder if 3 phase is available on the poles and you could just get them to run 3 phase to the shop instead of a converter? @ClemsonMGM

Turn the heat to ac and drop the thermostat and let it run for a bit, it’ll defrost the outside unit.
When it’s wet like this the defrost cycle alone may not run long enough or it may not be working at all.
Some units you can hear the defrost cycle run as the unit sounds angry and the suddenly it puffs steam when the condenser fan cycles ( outside unit is condenser)

If the Ice wasn't built up at the top(not just on the fins) hitting the fan that's what I would have done. I'll check it again today and see if the ice has melted yet or if I can knock the ice off.

Mine makes the angry sound. Freaked me out last winter the first time I heard it.

Bullshit technically anything north of Macon GA should have gas heat. And this came from my HVAC instructor in school. He was a HVAC system design engineer for Trane for 40 yrs before becoming a teacher in retirement. He was a complete fucking ass but he knew his shit and taught very well and you learned...

Everyone that was under is Instruction had some of the best knowledge taught. He did the retrofit HVAC cooling and heating work for the Empire State Building/World Trade Center and the pentagon back in the day.

I actually miss this guy as much as I hated him.

Yep, freaked me out too first time I heard and saw mine do it when I bought my house years ago, thought my junk was gonna catch fire.
HVAC Tech laughed at the “dumb Midwesterner” that had grown up on and always had gas heat.....
That was the last time anyone else touched my stuff until the new unit was installed 4years ago, and I’m still the only one.
