I have a '06 Taco... bought it with the tow package... I am about to buy a receiver mount shackle... what size is the factory receiver box? (I'm at work and cannot get to my vehicle to measure).

Also, can anyone recommend a good (decently priced) rear hitch receiver with w/ shackle...?

    Thanks!

That is what mine is. It's an '09 but I can't think that it would have changed.

That is more or less correct.

A class 1 hitch is just a flat piece of metal, that has a small locking pin and is rated to only pull about 500 lbs. Think of a "K" car pulling a jet ski. These hitches were more or less phased out about the time the last "K" car rolled of the line as well.

A class 2 hitch is 1 1/4 inches square and is rated to roughly 1500 - 2000lbs. It is still availabe on many cars and smaller SUVs.

Class 3, 4 and 5 receivers are all 2 inch square, and have varrying weight ratings based on how beefy they are and the tow ratings of the vehicles they are attached to.

Just figured I'd pass on a little trivia since I was late in answering your actual question.

Sorry, I deleted that last post. Class 3,4,5 is the same receiver hitch size. However, the CLASS rating is only based on the vehicle GVWR and the tow rating it can handle. Your vehicle has a CLASS rating when you buy it.

If I can remember, my 96 Tacoma was rated CLASS 3 while my 07 is rated a CLASS 4. Between the two, there was only 1500lbs difference in towing/GVWR. But that was enough to bump the 07 into the higher class. My 07 costs me an extra $40-50 in registration fees by being in the higher class.

I believe 2nd gens come with a class 3 receiver, as long as you tow less that 6500lb your fine.

What would be the weight the hitch itself(tongue weight) can carry? Like with a hitch mounted motorcycle/utility carrier. The carrier says it can hold 1000lbs. That weight would be directly on the hitch.

    OME and worth every penny.
Class IV and V, I believe are solid 2" stock and III is hollow tube.
I wouldn't put more than 500 pounds on tongue weight (as in a carrier).....don't care what capacity is....that's a lot of weight swinging away back there and could make things 'interesting' in an emergency swerve.

nix that, I don't remember why exactly my old Class V tongue is so heavy...just recall that it is.

About 10% of what your towing is what you want on the ball.
