if you have a good ground from the battery to the frame it will be fine to ground the winch to the frame correct?

I don't see why not, as long as the ground will support the amperage draw. Of course, if you really wanted to be OCD about it, you could determine how much wire it would take to get to the winch and pick a grounding point on the frame and ohm it out and see which had the higher resistance and go with the lower. But either way would work fine, IMHO.

I do think a battery would supply a better ground just not sure if it is necessary.

Agreed. That's a lot of wire to run for minimal gain, IMHO.

If you don't want to run cables, you can go this route. A three foot pigtail to the winch with a plug and then 30ft of jumper cables that you can plug in and hook to the battery. I'm running this on my trailer winch

So you got the winch done on the trailer? I sold my boat today and was going to give Marlin crawler a call tomorrow.

If you ain't on the FB Florida Tacomas group, Wreaths Across America this Saturday. If you want to participate, see the details below.

    From FB...

    REMEMBER our fallen U.S. veterans.
    HONOR those who serve.
TEACH your children the value of freedom.

Meet at Sonny's BBQ @0830 and leave @0900 hrs
2684 West County Road 48, Bushnell, FL 33513

On National Wreaths Across America Day each December, volunteers will place wreaths on individual veterans' graves in over 1,100 locations throughout the U.S., with ceremonies at sea, and at each of the national cemeteries on foreign soil. This year that day falls on 12/15/2018 and we will be part of an event to place over 25,000 wreaths on veteran gravestones at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

The cemetery is located beside part of the Croom WMA and is only about a 25 minute ride from Citrus WMA. Once the ceremonies are over we can break off for trail rides or meet up at the VFW down the road for lunch.

I know I posted the notice, but we don't usually get a huge turn out for this. It's usually only 6-8 of us. We'd really like to see that number go up. For those that might be considering it, or even not considering it, I would like to say that the first time I participated in this, I went because so many of the men in my family are veterans. My father's father served in WWII on a sub in the Atlantic. My mother's father served in the Army Air Corps in WWII in the Pacific, building runways for our bombers. My great uncles on my moms side served in the Navy or a nuclear sub and a aircraft carrier respectively. My uncle on my dad's side was in the Navy and served on a destroyer off the coast of Vietnam. My uncle on my mom's side served in the Navy, although I'm not sure what his posting was. My father was in the Marine Corps and saw combat in Vietnam, his best friend having been killed right next to him by friendly fire. He earned a Silver Star for Valor for carrying his friend's body back out of the bush. My father and I don't have a relationship and I haven't spoken to him in 18 years, but regardless of that, I will always be proud of his service in Vietnam. Sadly, although it was my full intention to carry on the family tradition of service with the Marine Corps, I was denied the chance because I am blind in my left eye. I tried every branch even the Army which was my last choice, coming from a Navy/Marine family, haha, but it was not to be.

That's why I went the first time, to honor my family, but having participated in this event, it hit me that I was doing something bigger than just placing wreaths. I was honoring not only my family but these veterans that had passed and not letting them be forgotten. Not all of them gave their lives for their country, but even though they may have survived whatever conflict they fought in, they gave part of their souls so the rest of us wouldn't have to.

I promise you, if you come out with us and participate in this event, you can't help but feel like you've done something bigger than yourself, more important than your own problems. It's an honor to be able to place a wreath, not just something you volunteered to do. Please consider coming out with us.
