need help removing headlights

hey guys i need some help on removing and replacing headlights. They seem very hard to remove. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

IIRC there are 4 bolts 3 are easy to get out, and 1 is a bitch and I had to take out my mud guard and reach up under the truck

 

I had my front bumper off when I replaced my headlights so it was easy. I don't know how other guys are reaching that lower outside bolt. I guess it's possible if you remove that inside mud liner.

 

I just found the bolt with my hand and stuck the socket on it. It's a very weird angle but can be done. I didn't have to remove anything for it.

As for actually removing them, just keep wiggling and working them around and they will come out.

 

Copied fro m another post. Used this and it was easy.

First, remove the two 10 mm bolts that hold in the grille, as well as the two trim fasteners that attach it to the headlights. Pull the grille up with both hands and even pressure.

Now remove the trim pieces below each headlight by removing the exposed trim fasteners. To take them out, just pull towarda the center of the bumper.

Remove the 3 trim fasteners that hold the bumper cover.

Now remove the 10 mm bolt in each headlight holding it to the bumper (bottom right of passenger side headlight, bottom left of driver's side headlight).

Pick a headlight, and lay under it. You'll see two black 10 mm screws that hold the splash guard to the bumper cover. Remove them and bend them back so that it rests on the tire and out of your way.

Now you have some room, use a 10 mm socket/ratchet to remove the bolt that holds the headlight to the bumper frame. If you look up at the headlight, you will see a bracket coming out of it. On the opposite side, is the 10 mm bolt. It is best if you feel for it first with your finger. It's right above a plastic fastener. Just break it loose and use your fingers for the rest.

Go the the other headlight and do the same.

To get the headlight out, unclip the turn signal harness, and headlight harness. The bottom of the headlight will need to be pushed back, down and then it comes out top first. Then unclip the side marker harness.

Repeat for opposite side.

 

did you take off the front bumper or was that not necessary? When you put the housing back in do i need to reinstall that bolt that is difficult to reach? Just wondering if it would be loose or not.

 

I left that bolt out and never had a problem with it.

Yeh, can't hurt trying...I didn't even bother. I did it on my 07 and had it like that for several months before trading it in. Never rattled or came out of alignment or anything

 

It's not that difficult to get to the "infamous 4th bolt". Just get under the truck, and run your hand along the bottom of the headlight, you'll find the bolt, get the socket and be done with it. I wouldn't want to leave it out when you put them back in. However, I just took off the front bumper cover, it was really really easy, so you might just want to go that route.

 

You can get it back in and I would try my hardest to get it back in. Just to be on the safe side you know? You wouldnt want your headlights alignment to get out of wac.

 

took them in and out today, not much of a problem at all. I even got to the hard to reach 4th bolt. Thanks for all the help

I didnt do the bhlm, i was actually replacing some leaky aftermarket headlights with some factory ones
