Honestly I am hoping it is just something simple like this.

I would run 91 or 93 (whatever premium is in your area) since mid-grade might not be enough to diagnose.

If it is ping, it's probably not that bad. There's a ton of threads on ping, and it's *probably* not going to hurt your engine. Mine has pinged for years, though it's a little better after the ECU flash... But, obviously we all hope it's just a loose heat shield...

I don't know what the 2nd gen N/A ping sounds like, but man...you should hear a supercharged 3.4l ping when it's running lean...it sounds awful. To the point where I have to immediately let off the throttle for fear of engine failure. It even burned out my catalytic converters before I upgraded the fuel system and got rid of 75% of the issue.

It's more of a metal rattle then a ping.

When mine pings it sounds like a metal rattle. I think it sounds a lot different than the 3.4L. I thought it was a heat shield for a while. Think about when it happens. If it's only under load, that suggests it's more likely coming from the engine. If not then it's any number of other things. Again, high octane gas is the best test

Yea it is definitely under load, I will try a higher octane when I have to fuel up next.

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
Said you checked heat shields, did you check the clamshell heat shield around the catalytic converter right under the driver's footwell?

I had exactly the same sound, at the same RPM's, in my '14 this summer. Was bad when cold, sometimes it went away when warmed up. Checked the usual suspects, then I tapped on the cat shield with a rubber mallet. Got some noise, so I took the clamshell off (after destroying the rusted nuts/bolts holding it on.) Sure as shit, had some rocks in there. Cleaned it all out, got some stainless hardware from OSH (before they went Tango Uniform), put it back together, and noise gone.

In fact, that might be the only unwanted noise I've ever isolated and corrected on this truck!

I don't know about 2nd gens, but on 1st gens the oil pan is dangerously vulnerable without the skid plate on, even the stock tin can skid plate is better than nothing. I hope you don't go offroad without one....one good hit to the oil pan and you're in big time trouble. Even on the street if you run over something big at driving speeds it can puncture the pan and you're gonna have a bad time
