trd offroad e-locker off 09 question.

hey guys have a question about a factory elocker. i want to buy a rear axle with e-locker to put in my 2010 taco, since i didnt get it when i bought truck in january.
i found a 09 taco trd offroad with rear locker. i heard that only the 05-08 tacos have an actual mechanical locker, and 09+ dont. is that true?
dont want to waste my money on the rear axle with locker if it wont work.
i saw the dash and it says rr diff lock, so it does have a locker but should i go for an 05-08 or are they all the same? thanks for looking.

 

I've read a few write ups of guys swapping out axles for the e locker, and it seems like a lot to do. There's more to it than just the axle, I dont know the specifics, but you have to do something with switching the computer control (or whatever its called) for the locker as well. Maybe look into the ARB locker as another less involved option.

 

but its still a locker right from the 09. it will work on my 2010 right... i have lsd now. so is that what you meant by mechanical and electric? are all lockers mechanical? or did they switch to electric 09+ but still does the job right, just want it incase i get stuck.

 

ahhh tacomaville i knew it was something.. just the LSD's then.

yes you can wire it up without the ECU but your ABS will be on,if that matters to you(i havent tried this way though)

what is the difference between lsd and locker? and why is one better than the other?

 

I have the 2006 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Sport Long bed which has the LSD. It has not let me down so far when I'm off roading, but I will say that the idea of a locking rear Diff has crossed my mind a few times already. Not sure if it would be worth all the work unless I put a solid axle up front. I may do that in the near future, not sure.

but you have 4x4... im pretty much a 1x2 right now since i only get power out of one wheel all the time... atleast if i got trd e-locker ill have power out of 2 wheels when i need it.... what do u think????

you should be able to do the "break" LSD fake technique and fake locker like conditions.

However, your rear is not a 'real' LSD as it uses braking to transfer power instead of clutches in the diff to transfer power. The 09+ trd off-road e-locker diff is the same diff as the other 6 luggers with the added e-locker.

For the costs of getting the computers, button, wiring, ect... a stronger ARB locker that you can engage any time you want, damn near any speed you want is a better bet for the cash. Plus, you'll now have on-board air for re-airing up tires when your done with the trails. On a 4x2... you'll need to be airing down a lot no question.

Dude, nothing can replace 4WD, not even a locker. You need 4WD first, then worry about a locker.

 

A locker will make the vehicle more capable than it currently is. This holier than thou 4x4 crap is really getting old.

My prerunner with the e-locker did way more than I thought would be possible. At the time, the prerunner was all I could afford, and for a daily driver it still had the ability to have some fun out in the desert with the locker. Sure it wouldn't climb rocks but it was still a capable, perfectly fine vehicle for my needs. When it came time to get another I did get a 4x4 because I knew I actually would use it now. It all depends on the owner's application, their needs, and their wants.

Dude you DONT need a 4x4 if you are not going off-road, its what its designed to do.

You NEED 4x4 if you are going off=road, it is what it is designed to do. I am not putting anyone down, I'm just saying if you are going off road the first thing you need to consider is 4X4 before ANYTHING. You cannot replicate the push/pull by installing a locker.

 

If you read my statement, I just said you need it for certain applications, not all off-road. Not everything is mudding, rock crawling, and massive suspension flexing crawling. Locked 2WD's do just fine in higher speed desert running and upwards of most class 3 trails (if pre-runner or lifted).

Your right a 2WD is great for high speed desert runs. If I lived anywhere south of North Carolina, I would own a Pre-runner! The only reason I own a 4WD is because of weather conditions where it is needed. But, I will still stand by my statements, even with mild off roading, 4WD is a much bigger benifit then a locker is.

 

It all depends on the application. I do not do any serious 4 wheeling, but a regular 2wd truck has problems out running around the hunting grounds. This is where a rear locker or LSD would make the biggest difference. I'm not looking for 4x4 capabilities - I didn't buy a 4x4 - I'm just looking to not get stuck so easily. Like the OP, I'm looking around at sticking a locker or LSD in my PreRunner.

 

yeah i dont need 4x4 since i wont be doing mud i want it for desert running, plus im in socal lol. so i heard 2wd are better for desert running(its what i heard, no one get offended, lol) i didnt know anything about tacomas when i bought mine in january so i just went with cheapest. im getting the locker for a great deal so thats why i want to jump on it since they arent cheap, i plan on keeping my truck for along time to just want to get some more capabilities out of it. plus this is probably the last thing im going to put into my truck this year since my bank account has slowly dropped... :0( its never wasted money when its going into the tacoma. but yeah going to put this locker on and save to get my coilovers, ucas and spindles next year. thanks for your input guys.
