2012 4L TRD synthetic oil type?

I am going to buy a few cases of Toyota brand oil filters and Mobile 1 motor oil when it goes on sale.

Two questions:
I live in Toronto Canada so it gets quite cold up here. The cap says 5W30 but I cant find any info for synthetic type in my manual. What is the recommended type of oil to use? I have read 0W20 but would just like to confirm with you all.
Secondly, does anyone know the actual model number for the appropriate filter to buy from Toyota?

5w30 ... I use mobil 1, but you can use any 5w-30 syn.

Brand doesn't matter just get the proper viscosity per manufacturer's recommendation at the cheapest price

 

Use 5w-30 synthetic. I use mobile 1 adv full synthetic and it has treated me nicely. I would never put 0w-20 in this truck.

 

yeah dont put 0w-20 in the single vvti 1gr.

That stated, 0w-30 mobil 1 full syn is PERFECTLY OK and is better for it as it offers better cold lubrication. Its what I run in my truck.

 

Another ticky mark for Mobil 1 5w-30 here...if you have an O'Reilly's parts store in your area they were running a special on it.

$55 Toyota 90915-YZZD3 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)

Toyota 90915-YZZD3 oil filters as they're $9 on Amazon and come with a drain plug gasket. Compared to $6-7 aftermarket, it's a no brainer for me.

The manual lists the specs for the oil you'll wanna stick to. Brand is preference, but weight is listed too. Most would argue in a super cold Canadian climate, 0W30 would be ok, but 0W20 would be out of spec. On this new of a truck, semi-synthetic or full synthetic is fine. Pick one and stick to it.

 

Like others have said. I use M1 5w30 and it has served me well. I use Toyota filters like listed above as well. OCI is 3k miles for me

 

Buy em off ebay, can get them for around $4.50 each.

 

So buy Synthetic oil, yet change it every 3K. Makes perfect sense to me.

 

Haha if you buy 10, sure. Every time I've bought cases of filters in the past, the vehicle gets sold, totaled, etc so $9 each vs my past experience of, say, $44 "each" is why I do it that way. 10 filters would last me 6 years and I'm not sure I'll have the truck then.

Finding oil on sale still allows me to do 5K mile oil changes for about $35-40 and that's perfectly reasonable to me.

 

The thinner oil may protect you more at non-operating temperature if its super cold.
I may be inclined to go with that oil if I’m doing a lot of short trips in the cold. If my truck reaches operating temp for a decent time during my drive I’d probably stick with the 5W-30.

 

That's why the 0W30, for winter time use in Canada, makes sense. Properly lubes engine both at the extreme cold and up to the higher operating temps. I'd still switch back to 5W30 in the summer months.

If you're in southern warm climates, 5w30 makes plenty of sense year round.

 

Supercharged and AFRs are in the 10s at WOT. Change it more frequently because rich AFRs cause oil to break down sooner

 

Are you all running your Mobil 1 5w-30 for 10,000 miles, or what?

 

I run 5W30 synthetic for about 5K. My OCI light usually comes on around 5,500-6,000 miles and I find changing at 5K to be easier to remember (once it's synced up with 5K intervals on the ODO).

I'm happy with my intervals. I make short trips, barely drive 7-8K a year and and happy to change the dark dirty oil slightly more than once a year.
