2012 4L TRD synthetic oil type?

Look up what even a 5w30 is when "cold" that is under 180*f..... its still WAY too thick to properly lube a motor, this is why i run 0w-30 even in hot summer months here in socal. even at 115*f ambient its still thicker than 30w at operating temps but MUCH thinner than a 5w... its a no brainer to run 0w-30 wherever an Xw-30 is required.

At operating temp the motor is relatively stable as far as oil temps so all of them are going to behave right around a 30w oil. But under that 0w-30 will be thinner and better to lube a motor with.

Do what you want with your truck brother, my point wasn't to debate well known scientific properties of oil. Things like "oil that's too thin for its operating environment won't lubricate effectively", as an example.

My responses were to the OP and thus just my thoughts on his questions since he didn't seem to know these properties well. If you wanna run 0W30 in hot southern California, for reasons that make sense to you, go for it

 

So if you ignore everyone who is speaking from their asses, Toyota says that 0w20 is fine;


Now it actually says 2010 onwards, but there were no noteworthy changes from 2005-2009, so basically, ANY 1GR engine will be fine with the 0w20.

So its your call.
But I would suggest that whatever you pick, make it a 0w, because that's the "cold pump" value, and the lower the better, especially when its colder out.

Maybe because "thickness" isn't the only variable in the equation. Oil needs to be thin enough to flow, thick enough to stick around and lubricate, along with all the other specific things that are weighted out when deciding a oil spec for an engine they design.

I mean...they have done a great job designing our frames, front diff bearings, drive shafts, leaf springs, u-joints, the composite beds and 7-pin trailer harnesses. Faced with all those accolades, I'm not sure why you'd doubt them.

I mean...mine does have a consistent tick to it, I'm hoping it only does it for another 300,000 miles though.

 

Mine has 178k miles on it and doesn't burn a drop of that thick ass 5w-30 oil
