Meet Athena, 1 year old white (?, looks blonde in person) German Shepherd. Trained by a retired Air Force K9 handler who became a K9 handler for a local PD after he got out, and she gets along great with our shepherd/lab mix Smokey (8 months old).
She has potential to be trained as a narcotics dog as well, and Smokey seems to have potential to be trained as a bite dog.

What training methods do you guys use? Smokey doesn’t seem to respond well to voice commands and treats like our labs did so I think I want to try training with a clicker. I also want to train him with hand signals, he already has learned sit, he responds better to the hand signal than verbal command. We are currently working on plotz, where he also responds better to the gesture than the verbal command.

I use verbal and hand. That way if my hands are holding something she can still listen with verbal, hopefully. Clicker is a good method to fine tune those commands

I use verbal and hand signals. In a noisy environment, he can see the signals and respond correctly.

It is also quite useful when I am conversing with a neighbor. I can sign for him to sit, stay, and be quiet. He will do so, but as he is a catahoula mix, he may also decide I am not paying him enough attention or chose to test my control and break position after a few minutes. o_O

Training never stops, but it does get easier as the pup matures and understands your wants more.

Good plan! We used verbal, hand all our big guys' life. Clicker when he was young to reiterate the point of the training. When he got older and lost his hearing, he would still recognize commands due to knowing "sign language". Guests would come over, and he would follow hand signs, as long as he was looking at you. Such a good boy! Miss him...had to do the deed in June. He was 15, and hearing was gone for the last 2 years.

Pic of Pongo (my dude!) when he was still here...this one is about 4-5 years ago.

K9 handler for the so in county I work for in fire rescue, uses a garmin e-collar. I started reading about them and found a guy named Larry Krohn http://pakmasters.com/
He has a book and you tube channel on e-collar it has been very interesting. I started with treats and marking and long lead then added a e collar (et-300)and after basic commands were already in place have been adding hand. I haven’t had a dog in 8 years and in 2 months with steady training he has done so well.on his e collar on a 1-100 level of stim he works at a 3. Not the collars of old.
