Recommendations on new Tacoma

    I currently own a 2008 Pre-Runner. Next month I'm moving to AZ and will be in the dirt more. I'll have monsoons with flooding, sandy riverbeds, and rough hilly dirt trails. My last trip out, I did some scouting around on dirt trails. Although my 2x4 pre-runner did ok (I didn't get stuck), there was definitely areas on the trail I got a little worried about.

    When I get to AZ, I was looking to get a 2018/2019 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Off-road. Is this a good choice? I don't plan on doing any extreme off-roading, just what I mentioned above.

    It also seems these new 4x4's don't have the ground clearance my current pre-runner has (I haven't actually done a side by side). Is that an issue?

    Any recommendations on extra equipment I might need/want. I currently have a shell on my Pre-Runner, and will probably get another.

    I say that the TD Off Road is a great choice! Try to get the 2018 if you can because it will be cheaper and nothing really changed between 2018 and 2019. That's what I did and I saved $80/month.

    I can't really comment when it comes to the ground clearance.

    A stock 4x4 OR will be plenty to get you to 90% of the places in AZ and a good chunk of that in 2wd. Decent tires and if concerned about body damage pick up some sliders and undercarriage armor. You dont want to be anywhere near a wash/riverbed when it is raining and in many cases does not even have to be raining at that spot. If it is dumping in the hills there is potential danger and you dont want to be downstream when the wall of water comes crashing down

    Case in point it was not raining at our condo complex when tons of water and mud overflowed from a blocked wash across the street. This wash originated 5 miles away and was fed by smaller run off washes

    Depending on what you do the standard sr5 4wd will probably do what you want. The trd gives you a
    crawl control feature for heavy duty off roading and a softer off road suspension to absorb bumps, extra skid plates etc.. I chose
    the sr5 because I've always had standard 4x4 Toyota trucks with their regular 4wd drive systems and never had an issue.
    The sr5 is also cheaper because it doesn't have the trd package. Ground clearance is the same across the board.

    I think the TRD OR is what I'll get. But than I started reading about the TRD Pro...............:thumbsup:

    Welcome to the forum. I have the off-road and love it. A pro will run about $5,000 more so that’s a lot of money for mods that you will be doing if you don’t stop reading this forum!:rofl:

    A standard OR is very capable. It will take you just about anywhere you want to go off road. If you're going extreme, then larger tires and possibly a lift to accomidate them will increase ground clearance significantly. But of course any mod to suspension and/or tires comes with a price beyond the dollars to do the mod. Street handling, MPG come to mind.

    I see the 4Runners aren't much different in price (after I add a shell). They just don't seem to have much ground clearance. Still looking at the TRD package.

    Any opinions between the two?

    Wait- the ground clearance is the same as what my stock 2002 4x4 OR had, except for the crossover exhast pipe in the 3rd gen. That makes for a lower ground clearance. I say the first three things you should do before all else are:

    1. Differential breather mod

    2. *Real offroad tires

    3. Exhast pipe reroute mod

    *may need lift if getting oversized tires and wheels, but not necessary. I kept mine at 265/75/16 on stock rims, and some go with pizza cutter offroad tires on stock rims or even on steel rims.

    There’s a bunch of things you can after all that like armor, lifting, major suspension upgrades, but the three above will get you going safely and well for offroad and water flooded streets. Have fun out there!

    Welcome, A TRD off-road with good tires will get most folks around. The TRD Off-Road
    will go just about anywhere the Pro will go.
    If you want to modify your truck, the logical
    choice is simple.

    4Runner has the 4.0L engine and MPGs really suck. There is limited tech offered on the 4Runner and the entire vechicle is rather dated. But, properly equipped is not a bad OR option although I look at it as more of a street SUV that has much better than average OR capabilities.

    The other thing I was wondering about are the mud flaps. Do you guys keep them or dump them. I just notice my front flap on my pre-runner has a nice cut into it. Not sure how long it's been there or when it happened.

    I put flippy flaps on mine, and took off the hard plastic ones. Plasticolor or something like them for cheap- Ive lost too many of the nice expensive ones and don’t get those anymore. Funny thing is, I havent lost a Plasticolor one yet.

    I got these- they even have the retro FJ-esque mtn logo on them. You will have to get some small 2” brackets and longer screws to mount them, but its easy:

    Oh yeah, as for equipment- get a lithium emergency jumper, first aid kit, shovel, tow strap, extra bright flashlights, water jugs, traction boards, cb radio, etc. The list goes and grows now that you’re come here!

    The OR is a great stock set up. I bought a 08 in the summer of 07 and it always ran great until I broke it for good a few weeks ago.

    Pro seems great too if you want or have the extra $ to spend. They are pretty hard to come by here and didn’t like the 19’ color options.

    SR5 jumps pretty quick in price once you add 4x4 so with the cost difference, made more sense to me to go OR again.

    Here 18s were pretty close to the same price as a 19’ and used 18s were only a few k less so that’s something else to compare. The good and bad of a Tacoma is how well they hold their value.

    I will say a Pro or OR will be easier to sell or trade in down the road though.
