I have 450+ on mine and the body is just starting to rust (mainly around the windshield, likely from a cheap replacement job a couple years ago) - and the bottom of one door. The frame was replaced a couple winters ago... and the rear bumper all but disintegrated. Other than that it's still in good shape... even with the crud they put on the roads here so if his body hasn't started rusting there is still a lot of life left with a new frame!

If you get a new frame don’t do any of these things. Bed liner will eventually crack even if tiny cracks, allow moisture to get under, and cause rust. Expanding foam will trap moisture and cause rust.

Best thing is as soon as you get the new frame, treat with something like Fluid Film, CorrosionX, Boeshield, or whatever anti-rust treatment product is convenient to acquire in Canada, and touch it up when it eventually begins to wash off.

Rinse the frame when you can in the winter to get rid of road salt.

    Don’t do rubberized undercoating either.

He has 300,000 KM = 186411 miles, but yeah still a ton of miles for a car company to do a frame replacement.

Since it was inspected and undercoated by the dealer within the required timeline, you're covered for 15 years. If it went in service at the end of 2007 you're good until the end of 2022.

Don't put the cart before the horse. It will DEFINATELY be totally failed in the next 4 years. At which point you will get your new frame.

Why stress yourself out? Drive it and neglect the frame and it will be Swiss cheese in a couple years. If there's no 10mm holes right now nothing short of a favor from God will get Toyota to replace it.

    Patience my friend.

There is another thread here where a guy had his frame replaced in Dec 2009 and his dealer just told him that this frame rotting out again.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tacoma-frame-replacement.581791/#post-19346823

It was on a 2001, but still a new frame installed in 2009 and its rusting out already.

Had my frame replced on my 07 not long ago. They will only replace if there is a hole larger than 10mm. Take a hammer and make those holes bigger lol.

Heres the hole i had that got me a free frame. I May or my not have made it bigger than it originally was ;)

If it's true he is covered for 15 years, why have I not see that put in writing from Toyota. Please don't make statements that are pure hearsay. I know for a fact people who have 2005-2010 are covered for 12 years from their "in-service date", with the only exception being the letter I got in the mail stating everyone is covered till 1-31-2019 if your I.S.D. is before this date.

EDIT: I just saw you are from Canada and I'm not sure of the warranty of your Tacoma's. What I stated is for people in America so there is no confusion.

Having been a Toyota truck owner for years. It’s just a given that they rust. Ten year Tacoma in the snow belt is like a twenty year old Silverado or Ford. Having said this I still drive a Toyota. Besides rust they are good and don’t leave you stranded. Resale value is also amazing, even with the rust. ;)
The one’s pretending this is just salt causing the rust and this happens to every vehicle. These people are either joking or extremely ignorant about metals and corrosion.

Where abouts are you in Ontario? Im in Ottawa and they approved my 2007 for a new frame after about 10mins, this was done late August.

I just got a call this morning to bring it in, frame is getting replaced tomorrow.

I may have missed it, but which dealer are you dealing with?

He said himself they told him the warranty extended for 15 years from the in service date. I didn't make that number up.

If the frame has had the rust preventative coating applied by toyota, the warranty extends even further, at least up here.

I am curious about this statement as I have a 2010 Tacoma and am currently residing outside of the US and worried about the state of my frame. Is it possible your father got one of the frames that is on the 11 and later models? Or did he own a 1st gen Tacoma?

This whole frame issue is making me reconsider buying another Tacoma. I love my truck, but when I drove Ford (Rangers, F150's, etc.) They had some body rot issues, but at least the frames held. It's like Toyota doesn't understand the markets they're sending these trucks to. And it doesn't seem to be an issue with the cars. My daughter has a 2002 Camry with 350,000+ miles on it and its only issue is a small oil leak. Toyota better get on the ball, with the Ford Ranger coming back and a redesigned Colorado, people might get sick of the Tacoma frame issues and jump ship.

If you DON'T have it coated, then THEY DON'T have to fix it if it fails. If you DO coat it, that extends the rust through warranty.

You really think ford will be better?

And look, even though I dislike ALL american brand cars, that's not a knock against ford by any stretch. The point is that ALL steel will rust in the salt. If you want it to last, you have to maintain it.

Here's the problem with using yours as an example; yours is a 2002. Your replacement frame was manufactured by DANA, the same outfit that made the first one. 2005+ frames that are being replaced were originally made by Dana, and they're being replaced by frames made by Metalsa, which took over the frame manufacturing after Dana's frame division went under due to losses resulting from Toyota lawsuits.

Looks like he's using them as washers to hold the heads of the screws that are driven into the 2x4 that is now the primary structural element of that frame.
