Engineers have managers, they usually make the business decisions regardless of the engineers suggestion.

Oil is too dark for a new engine and your dipstick looks burnt. Shavings are not a good sign.

You still bitchin? Let me give you a FACT: Less than 3% of vehicle owners still change their own oil. I could give a rat's ass where the filter is and 96 more out of 100 people feel the exact same way.

Do you have any published data that shows this initial factory fill? I have had a 2nd gen tundra(US Built) and a FJ(japanese built) oil analysis with factory fill with 1k on them, and both had the same moly #s as Toyota 0w-20 from over the parts counter.

This looks to me like very fine particulate matter (think "silty"). Ordinarily I'd have thought it was just worn-out oil. But based on the presence of the larger shavings, I'm guessing the dark stuff is metal.

Same oil, nothing special. However, every engine is filled, tested, drained, installed and then refilled. No clue what that initial fill was. I would say it is a specific break in type of oil used for test. But when we get them they have 0W-20.

I know you don't have actual figures of that fact to back up that statement, but since over half the world's population are women, we know they don't change their own oil (maybe a couple) and with so many electric cars, they don't change their oil. And now with "MetroSexual" men that can't even change their mind, they don't change their oil. It's only the last few of us that still do and have for a very long time. We are the last of a dying breed....

The Toyota dealer told me this yesterday. The engine factory fills it, runs it, drains it and refills it. So there is no need to change the oil at 5k miles like I am fixin to do. Because all of the metal filings are gone. Let's see if I believe him.....Mmmmmmm NO. I have been working on cars when that guy in parts was nothing but a sperm sample. It takes many miles of running any motor, car, outboard motor..whatever to get rid of everything. Run it, let the particles settle, drain, refill.

    Rinse and repeat.

I've been to the Tahara plant where they build 4Runners and seen the process. Your truck, your call.
As far as having numbers to back up my claims, in 2007 there were 17% still changing their own oil. By 2013, there were around 7%. That was the last report I read before it was put behind a paywall. I just extrapolated.

I believe the process exists, I just don't believe one oil change gets rid of all the particles before it is installed.
