I can't make it. Have a lot of small side jobs that need to be done before Christmas and weekends booked. I think I'm busy 'til the new year. I should learn to say no to people.

dude, I may not have the added cash but holy fuck am I ever happy I say no hahaha.

I had one the other week, I told them before I even went I'm not interested in big jobs or finding what the fuck is wrong with their wiring.

had to replace a GFCI, after doing so they started asking about a bunch of other shit and told them no i'm not interested sorry
I knew the house cause I worked there before. Total fucking nightmare of fucked up wiring. No way was I getting involved with it.

    Yep!

I agree, stopped doing side work almost all together and I am much happier about it. The added cash is great and all, but free time and not having to worry about other shit is so nice.

I was surprised they still had my number. I installed some pot lights for them a few years ago. And it was when I was doing them I found that the wiring is all fucked up. Fucking circuits being double fed so turning off one breaker doesn't actually turn shit off. If its on the same line as the other one you can actually continually feed a breaker. So like cct 1 and 5 are actually the same line in a single phase panel. Can load all 1,5,9,13 or 2,6,8,12 etc and not one breaker will be tripping like a dead short.

It's a royal fucking nightmare and pain in the ass to find and figure out without a higher end circuit tracer.

I found it by accident when I was doing the pot lights. Happy I did cause I know not to get involved.

yeah that's doesn't sound fun at all hahah back in the day furnace guys would put the service switch on the neutral wire o_O shit wont run but its still bloody hell live. found that out the hard way when I was replacing a furnace. needless to say, I now turn it off at the breaker

I got shocked a few weeks ago from that changing a lightbulb at my girlfriends hahaha.
first time Ive been hit in a few years and it was similiar/same.
they were switching the neutral instead of the line and had the fixture wired reverse where the side of the socket was the line and always on. So when screwing in a lightbulb my finger touched the edge and I got a jolt.

Shaddy work done in her house previously really fucked up.

Its also against code so those older guys doing that really shouldn't be haha.
Its the same reason why when peter suggested to me to switch the ground on my battery gauge to turn it off on the truck I was like wtf? Had no possible thought of ever doing it.

In DC sure its actually ok and not against code. But in AC like majority of what electricians deal with its against code in so many ways.

Those double feeds can be dangerous too. We had one job at the old Nortel building in Brampton where they did the same. The wires were labelled saying one circuit but when turned off it still remained live and we ended up going through the whole panel one at a time and never saw it turn off. Sure enough found it eventually and it was double fed. Luckily I have the habit of working like its always live so I didnt get hit and only caught it because I saw wires arcing as i was taking apart the joints.
Given this was working on 347V lighting, shit can be deadly.

It's all referrals from people I know that pass my name around. I don't look for work and won't take on anything large because of time so smaller things I'll do but I try to spread it out and ask them to wait or call someone else. I'll charge high in the hopes they say no but lately everybody's been accepting because they can't find anyone.

I wouldn't mind meeting some of the group but I'm in London so it's a long drive out to Milton or Mississauga. I'll see what I can do once the date and time are confirmed.

347 lighting is called a Widowmaker for good reason.
MWBC's in heavy commercial and industrial teaches you to be more cautious of neutral wires LOL.
Old house and old apartment building renovations and emergency repairs teaches you to never under estimate a handyman/hack. Always use a NC tester.
Lol they will put in 3 times the work to do it dangerous and wrong, I used to get upset when I saw it years ago but now I've seen it so much I just shake my head.

What is scaring me lately though is some of these recently certified electricians that got their hours and training over seas. Not only are some of them working for $15 an hour, but let me describe a recent interaction with one of these companies.
    One example of many...
Called in to hookup apt 60A subpanels for a bunch of recently gutted and renovated apartments in a 20 floor building. Fortunately I continuity test everything before I hook it up. It would have been exciting if I had landed the wires and turned it on when they had L2 and N reversed. That 600A feed-panel would have really been hummin'. When I went in and started opening some of their panels, sure enough, hot and neutral switched on the main lugs of the panel, then I see MWBC landed on twin breakers.
Their foreman/"master electrician" (cough) could not understand why I was so upset about dead shorts at 600A subpanels,, nor why I was so disgusted with him that he could not understand why a neutral with two hots on the same phase would be a problem... I was so tempted to power down the building, hook up as is and let him throw the main 2000A switch-gear.

Lol I'll see if I can find the pics of this one small commercial/resi building we did a couple years ago. Lol landlord and his brother doing the work themselves. Inspector was driving by and saw some guy walking in with a spool of wire and thought he'd stop in... Lol only time I've heard of an inspector hanging around to get the power cut to a building immediately. Hydro guys said the inspector looked like a chicken flappin his arms about to "cut the power now"!
LOL When I got there I had walked 4' into the building and my words were "full gut and re-do". Over 600# of wire went to the recyclers from that small building (2 commercial and 3 resi units). Oh I gotta find that one pic of the stove wire wrapped around and holding up 20' of copper sewer stack. Subpanels everywhere that looked like vomited spaghetti, I thought I'd seen everything but that place was worthy of pictures.

I've even told people when they say yes to a high price that I was trying to get them to go elsewhere
