I just recently purchased a 07 Tacoma Prerunner with the 4.0 V6 and while looking under the hood I noticed what looked like the oil filter was mounted on the top driver side. It also had what appeared to be some sort of shield to catch oil from dripping all over the place. Did some engineer actually put the oil filter in a easy to reach place or is this something completely different?

This is the first Toyota I've owned and since all my previous vehicles were GM or Jeep products I'm used to having to crawl under the vehicle and contort my arm to reach the filter.

Normal. Attach a piece of 3/8" hose to the nipple below the drain cup and run it down to the bottom of the truck so you can unscrew the filter and drain the cup easily. If you're using a standard size filter the cup is big enough to hold all the oil in the filter without spilling over.

Or take a screwdriver and punch a hole in the filter and the oil will drain back down into the oil pan so no spillage if you are careful.

"punch a hole" - Great idea! You're a genius. After two years of free oil changes from the dealer I'll do it. I'd better check the engine for spilled oil until then.

Yeah, ain't that cool! And the truck sits so high you don't even have to drive it up on ramps to get to the drain plug.

Never tried that. Never even considered it to be honest. So where do you punch the hole - top, side close to the top, close to the bottom?

At the top so it relieves the suction and allows it to drain. Learned that back in 1974 when I bought a Mazda Rotary Pickup that had the filter on the firewall upside down.

Would doing this allow any particulates in the filter to backflow through the motor on its way down to the sump?

Just did mine. Half of my damn hot oil splashed all over the f'ing driveway and my hands. When you take the drain plug out the oil gushes out so fast nothing can stop it. Even my big ass 15qt drip can caught only half.

No joke, I'm seriously upset about this. It took me longer to clean up the oil spill than to do the oil change.

Don't be a smart-ass. This was my first EVER oil change. Nobody told me to take the darn cap off. Why? That makes zero sense to me.
