    Some people leave it open after cutting and I have yet to hear of any problems that have arisen from that (other than basically making a mud scoop under your truck). While you lose some structural integrity of the mount by not welding in the face plate, I doubt any of us wheel hard enough to make it matter. Still: for aesthetics and the sake of clean and complete work, I'd prefer to weld in every time.
