I just recently noticed that when I back up I don't have any reverse lights. I took the bulbs put and checked them. There good. Does anyone think its the reverse light switch? And does anyone know where its located at? Or does anyone know somethings else that could cause it. Thank you all.

Also does your truck have trailer wiring? I know reverse lights usually are untouched in those setups but I've seen some weird shit caused by bad trailer wiring.

My buddy had a similar problem on his '01, turned out to be a shorted socket where the bulb plugged in. Just one side kept both sides from working on his truck, I just took a multimeter to it to see if they were getting power at all. One side did, the other didn't. Replaced the connector and voila! T'was fixed.

But reverse light switch is never a bad place to start, it pays to have a multimeter on newer vehicles. :D

Yeah. Ill start by checking the switch. I can't see where it has changed anything else on the truck. Like lights or anything. Everything still works besides the reverse lights. The truck does have a short throw shifter in it so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.but thanks for your alls help. Does anyone know how much a new switch is.

    $27.12 from the theautopartshop.com

From advance or autozone it's around $35, checked on the computer at work for you. =]

Better part from TAPS btw, and that's coming from a parts pro at Advance. :D

    Comes down to patience though.

    Hello All,
This is my first time post to this forum and I am experiencing the same problem as was described in this thread. I found the problem, a wire pulled free from the back up wire plug that is just left of the transmission. Is it possible to get to the other end of the cable through the hole where the manual shifter is located via the interior cabin to either replace or repair this cable?

I just checked in my FSM (for '99 Tacomas), and there is a relay just for the backup lites. It appears to be near the dash fuse box. Yours is likely similar.

Thanks Tan4x4 for the reply. Once I replace the damage wire, and if the problem with the back up lights continues, then I'll look at the relay.

My initial question was enquiring about the accessibility through the shifter console to the other end of the wiring on top of the transmission.

What makes you think that wire ends up near the shifter? It likely either goes to either the fuse or to the lights themselves.

BTW, on closer look at the wiring diagram, that relay is only there for column-shift automatics.

I was under my truck this morning, had the one end in my hand and I noticed the the one of two wire leads pulled from the plug. I then followed the cable along the top of the transmission with my hand and notice that it stops a foot down and it is plugged into the transmission.

It's not a question if this wire is at fault. I've already determined that it is. I just want know if anyone has gone through the shifter to get at their own if they have in fact experienced a similar issue.
