Weight fell off driveline?

Yes, you can just be aware that the drive shaft is not as strong as a non rusted one and it does not spin when you are in 2H.

 

Eh... last I checked, there's no carrier bearing on the front shaft.
Unless you mean the front HALF of the BACK shaft....

Only if it came off the FRONT shaft. On the BACK shaft, it will impact both 2 and 4wd.

Weld it.
If its not noticeable, its probably not a *serious* problem. However if its close to the carrier bearing, the rubber dampener there may be sucking up the vibes. Could still be adding stress on bearings/ujoints.

Also, there's enough rust on that shaft that the balance is suspect anyway.

 

The weight came off right where whatever shaft I'm trying to say joins the carrier bearing. It goes to the front diff though

 

Clean mating surface real good with 90% alcohol and bond it with 2 parts adhesive. You should be good to go.

 

It's weird, put it into 4x4 on the way to work today. 20mph - 55 mph felt great, no vibrations at all. Even while in neutral

 

Would JB Weld work for this application?

Yes JB weld would work.
Alcohol will not remove or neutralize rust, just degrease it, bonding to rust will lead to failure again.

Again it's not really rust as its mud and other crap I haven't cleaned. Probably looks just fine if I pressure washed it

At the minimum it needs to be wire brushed or wire wheeled to clean flaky rust then degreased before attempting to bond weight back on. Pressure washing may remove the loose rust and a good start to the clean up process.

 

Ya I'll have to do that. It was relatively clean underneath but a good wash would help.

 

Mine is a 2011 with 210k miles. Absolutely zero rust on the frame, drive shaft and rear axle. I don't get it, by chance do you know what plant yours was manufactured in? Mine was Texas


Even grandpa's 1998 GMC Sierra isn't rusted..


I seriously didn't know that rusted frames/vehicles were even still a problem until I got on Tacoma world. This has been crazy for me haha


Also, if you're going to remove the driveshaft to do any work on it, it may be a good time to replace your spiders if you haven't done so in long time of of they need it. Two birds with one stone!

 

Like I said, there's NO CARRIER BEARING on the FRONT SHAFT (the one that goes to the front differential). There's just a shaft with 2 u-joints on it.
