I’m about to sell a 30 year old rifle in a McDonald’s parking lot (to someone I know). Legal? Yep. Still feels kinda sketchy? You betcha.

Damn, was under my truck and noticed my passenger side CV seal is going out again. Leaking fluid pretty good. These things are so damn annoying.

I learned last night I’m supposed to have been putting grease on the outer lip when I drive it in, and I haven’t been. I wonder if that’ll be the thing that keeps it from leaking next time

Lower those angles. Stop going into places that might have object rip the boot. Rebuild with care.

But what the heck lift it wheel it rip it as long as you can fix it.

It’s not the boot, it’s the seal in the diff to keep the diff oil from leaking out.

Not too horrible. Remove CV, remove seal, tap new one in, and that’s it. Though I do manage to fuck it up because you have to get the seal in juuuuuust right.

No deal installer? But the smallest one i have is for a 3406 crank seal. So just use a socket and drive it in? Purchased a chiltons for the 08. Funny its the same for my 93 but a different cover. Think i got ripped off.

Yep, it’s in the FSM. Supposed to put a little grease on the outer lip that seats against the diff. Didn’t realize that until I was randomly watching a video last night on seal install.

Hmmmmmm. I have never heard of that in my life. Got a link I'd like to read that or see it. Putting some grease on the lips that ride against the CV is a must do so that the seal doesn't fold over on the CV and seal. Also helps to get the CV in better without possibility of tearing the seal.

So that grease that he put on the outside of the seal just helps it go in easier it has nothing to do with the sealing of the seal. Doesn't hurt the seal. I do it on the rubber coated ones like that for that reason. Just to drive them in easier.

Where the FSM said coat the seal lip. That is what I am talking about. That outer lip can turn inwards and not seal properly or they can get torn.

Thought it was sop to grease the seal before install.
