For your climate, 0W may not be necessary and you can get away with 5W but make all efforts to find the correct oil for warranty/comparability purposes. If you stick to 5W, maintain a 5000 mile oil change interval.

    Yeah I change every 5000.

My warranty is out the window I’m assuming. Doubt they cover me outside of the usa.

The 10k OCI is based on being synthetic, not viscosity. (and it's understated as lab testing readily shows)

If he runs 5-30 syn, OCIs can still be performed within the duty ratings of the owners manual.

So he *may* need shorter OCIs, based on use, but not on viscosity.

    Houston.

I got a job in Dubai, so I shipped the truck to lebanon where my parents live. I’ll leave it here then go to Dubai.

If an engine is so sensitive to these minimal changes in oil viscosities then it follows that it would be equally sensitive to start up temperatures (viscosity changes with temp right?). It's not like we are only allowed to start the engine at exactly 20* C +/- 5 deg lol.

Toyota probably needed to show that these trucks get slightly better emission over the millions of trucks they build so the 0.1% difference in friction from the thinner oil helps get them that so they can claim a more efficient lineup.

No one is saying you should run gear oil in it, but 5W30 is probably going to make zero difference.

I've never seen wear tests comparing 5W-30 to 0W-20. When oils went from 10W-40 to 10W-30, so forth, my old boss said thinner oils flowed faster taking heat away from parts. All I have read for years is getting that tiny bit more MPG over all those 10,000's of vehicles, nothing about engines lasting longer, just 30% less life.

If the API or ILSAC ratings are the same whatever oil you use, that is reasonable, will be fine. A 5W will not harm anything. Look for the API or ILSAC 'donut" on the oil bottle. Most likely Toyota is recommending a API SM or SN or ILSAC GF-5 rating for your truck, check the manual. It is not mandatory that you use 0W for warranty, or Toyota branded oil, it is just recommended. It just has to be of a comparable rating(API or ILSAC GF-5), not weight. It's covered under the Magnuson-Moss Act, takes a bit of reading to find it but it's there.
This doesn't mean you can go and drop SAE 60 weight racing oil in your engine because 60 weight in neither API SN/SM or ILSAC GF-5 rated.

Ok I did some searching today, I found mag1 ow20 full synthetic.
I also found castrol edge 5w20 semi sentheyic.

I’m still going to search more, but what are y’alls thoughts on those two? Thanks

You'll be perfectly fine running 5w-20. The 0w-20 and 5w-20 have the same viscosity at operating temperature.

The difference in start up protection between the 0w and 5w is negligible.

And even if all you could find was 5w-30...don't sweat that either. Run a synthetic and call it a day.

There is NO impending catastrophic engine failure on your horizon.

Ok found havoline 0w-20 for a good price. I think that’s the winner.

MAG1 is decent oil by Warren Dist. Don't be afraid to use that either. Warren makes a lot of the house brands, and MAG1 is their own brand.

That is exactly it. It all comes down to carbon tax. If the vehicle can show a slight increase in fuel economy by using a thinner oil Toyota save carbon tax wise. It's one of the reasons Toyota went with WS trans fluid. They state that WS fluid is good for the life of the vehicle under normal driving conditions.

Yah I think I’m going to go with mag1

The havoline seems to come from Thailand or the Middle East or something. I’ll stick with american.

some mis-information on this thread. The owners manual states in no uncertain terms that a heavier oil than 0w20 should be used for hi-speed and towing applications.

    I run 0w40 in both my 2.7 Taco and my 4.0 4runner

The advice to the OP you get here or on any forum, take it with a grain of salt.

The words “probably” “no issues” in regards of the (other) oil type they have or do use, is not what the TOYOTA engineers recommend for the best performance of your engine under even the most sever circumstances. If they do so in your owner’s manual, then use that.

If you have warranty concerns, those type advice will not cover your a$$.

If warranty is N/A where you’re going, you still can not go wrong with the TOYOTA engineer's recommendation until proven wrong, in which case you’ll be covered!

    It’s a win win!

But if must do as circumstances dictate, It’s a tough engine and it ought to still last. Choose wisely!

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!
