I have a 2014 2.7L five speed reg cab Tacoma. It’s got a 6” BDS Fox shocks lift. 33x12.5 Toyo muds on 18x9 fuels. From what Toyota has told me it has a 4.10 gearing ratio stock. 2WD she drives fine. Uphill or with weight, you can feel it. In 4H uphill on rocks climbing amateur things it bogs out. I haven’t messed with 4L too much with this set up. She seems to struggle a bit with the 33’s though and I’d like to add weight while in 4WD.

I’ve heard. Throw and intake and exhaust on it. I don’t think that’s going to help anything especially low end. Not by themselves. I feel as if gears is the best option to gain low end torque. Problem is I don’t know what ratio to go to (have been suggested 4.56). I’d like to be able to add a few hundred pounds in the bed between a tent and camping items, etc. and crawl moderate trails but still be able to drive it on the highway. (I also plan on a locker I think rear would be the best to start with?)

I’m trying to get this truck moving from a stop and crawl without worrying about it stalling in 4WD. Just looking for some ideas/ratios..why/other suggestions

    Thank you!

I would like to get the URD supercharger eventually. What gear ratio would you consider?

4low is gonna be your friend, especially being manual and ESPECIALLY being a 4 banger......

even NA'd v6 with all of a 2in lift and 265's needs 4 low to be fun in anything off road.

I only ever use 4hi for two things. 1. icy snow roads, 2. to lock the front and rear axles together during high speed driving to make braking more predictable (rear tends to lockup before the front in 2wd)

I’ve heard I should use 4L more but I’m afraid I’m going to bind it up

Gearing is your friend in a off road scenario , most aftermarket gear ratio charts are colored using (3) green(fuel saving) , yellow(performance ) and red (power)

Gear your vehicle accordingly to the usage , as for your application I would gear it low enough (higher numerically)gear so your truck works better in torque multiplication

So for instance your truck had 3.73 gears stock I would run 5.13 gear or higher numerically gear

If your truck came stock with 4.10's the 4.88's will only give 300-500 more rpm

It'll bind in 4H just as easily if you're not on a slippery surface .

If you got the dough for new gears, go for it. If /when I ever regear I'm definately going to do at least a rear locker at the same time..

    or

Take @nd4spdbh 's advice and use the low gearing that came with the truck.. or go down in tire size

It will bind the same in 4Lo and 4Hi. 4Lo is actually way easier on the truck off road.

New Gearing will really help you around town .... 4 Lo should already be geared short enough for off-road.

Its going to bind the SAME whether its in high or low.
If you're wanting more torque in 2WD, there are modifications for that.

Yup like stated, 4hi and 4lo will bind just as bad if you are on high traction surfaces.

But 4lo makes it easier on the motor, clutch and trans by a factor of 2.57.... or 257% easier.... Seriously, even on my v6 auto i use 4lo all the time off road as lets face it my essentially stock truck has no business doing more than the 45-50mph top speed that 4lo offers in anything other than fire roads... so why not have more gears to play with rather than maybe 1 or two.

Funny story about 4lo, was out at the pismo sand dune, dude in a nicely optioned FJ was stuck, obviously in 4hi just SMOOOOOOOKING his clutch. I scoot down there on my dirtbike and go, hey man, put it in 4lo you will stop smoking your clutch, he goes, really i thought it was harder on the clutch *facepalm*. Puts it in 4lo, gets out super easy, proceeds to try n make it up the sand dune banging off the revlimiter in 4lo 1st gear flags me over and goes, "do i have to shift in 4lo"...... jezus yes, you can shift through all the gears man.

Use it!! Pick a gear that works best with the terrain you’re in and you find yourself shifting and clutching a lot less. Just avoid sharp turns on surfaces that do not have any give. This is where your dirvedrsin will bind up and possible break something. Rehearing would be a good yet more expensive option but try using what you’ve already paid for- 4L.

Something to keep in mind typical 4 cyl's like RPM. Looking at the specs this motor -it makes max torque in the 3800-4000 RPM range and max horse power horse power in the 4800-5200 rpm range. This is not a motor that is happy running down in the 2000 RPM range. Your going want to see this motor cruising down the hyw well into the 3000 rpm range with just a down shift away to be in the meat of your power band. As mentioned earlier gear it down. I used to run around with 36's on my 1980 Toyota 4cyl. It definitely needed more gear than the 4:10's it had and 4 lo was my friend for off road.

People are scared of rpm it seems. I keep my truck in 4th until I'm over 70mph at which point I will throw it into drive. Truck is much happier spinning freely at 2800 with the torque converter locked than shifting up and down and locking/unlocking all over the place in 5th.
