Yeah, that sludge was BAD. Hopefully that gets taken care of too.

The other thing is that I can't imagine that ECU's just fry all by themselves.

If I were you, I'd leave your OBD scanner hooked up all the time. That way, if whatever caused the ECU to fry in the first place rears its ugly head again, you might have some bread crumbs.

I've only heard of capacitors going bad which will happen eventually with electrolytic capacitors since the electrolyte dries up. It would be good if some owners with confirmed bad ECUs took the cover off and did some electrical testing.

No wires toasted anywhere that I could find and no evidence of anything wrong with the circuit board when I opened it up, but disclaimer that I'm not an electrician either.

I have ordered two cans of the BG EPR(can't find the stuff here on the island) when the cans get here, planning on doing a "flush", twice. Then remove the valve cover and see what's up. It was all very soft and pliable stuff, figure it'll come out. Will update after for more finality. Perhaps I can/should make another post once I've got some conclusion on that one.

I was gonna do an ATF fluid run. A member post info on why not to. Ended up using Sea Foam both in gas and oil.

You dont need magic elixers for soft sludge

Change the oil/filter with 1qt ATF and the rest dino every 2k for 3 cycles.

Last change go back to your normal oil of choice and OCIs

Stop recommending ATF. Its an old wisetail like the 3,000mile oil change or Castro and Tupac are hanging out in cuba. ATF has no detergent value and hasn't for a long time. Plenty of products out there DO have detergents and are recommended for such purpose. Even Diesel and Kerosene have more detergent value than ATF.

    I'll make it easy:

Sticky Lifters? - Dont use ATF
Loud Valvetrain? - Dont use ATF
Excess Sludge - Definately Dont use ATF (Especially with the amount the OP has)
Worn Timing Chain - Dont use ATF
Piston Slap - Dont use ATF
Engine Nocking or Humm - Dont use ATF

ATF is not designed to be used in an Internal combustion engine.

Grab some Supertech synthetic fir $15 and do 5k oil changes with a $5 filter change. Add seafoam, marvels mystery oil, b12 or any of the other hundred products and add to the crankcase right before an oil change. Idle the car for 20 minutes and change the oil. Boom.

Here’s a shot in the dark regarding not getting any readings. A Toyota mechanic had problems with mine bc it is California spec(whatever that means; I’m in NC). Anyway, he eventually was able to get scanner data once he had figured that out.

Man I had lots of similar things your taking about with my truck wouldn’t run. Smoked. Flooded. Get you some carb cleaner and turn the truck on and try to find a vacuum leak. I had to trace all my hoses and find it. Worth a shot carb cleaner is cheap!
