OP, it's fine.
0-20w was chosen for US emissions and/or minor cost reasons.
Use whatever the best oil you can get ahold of while still synthetic.

Your warranty most likely goes out the window regardless. And the Moss-Magnuson (spelling?) protections goes out the window too.

In other threads I've had more time and/or patience to explain why, but don't get ulcers worrying about 5-20. I personally plan on using 0-40 in the future.

Can I ask why you're choosing to run 0-40 over 0-30?

 

I don't understand why people use the incorrect viscosity while inside the Mfg 5/60k warranty. Seems too risky to me.
Although the manual does use the word "recommended viscosity", I think people are reading too far into the word "recommended"...
The sentence right below that seems pretty clear about Toyota's expectations:
"If SAE 0W-20 is not available, SAE 5W-20 oil may be used. However, it must be replaced with SAE 0W-20 at the next oil change."

Sure, higher visc probably isn't a problem, but not something I'm willing to chance.
Gives them something to potentially hold against you in the event of major failure.

 

The OP has no other choice. 0w20 isn't available to him so if he ends up running 5W30 synthetic he will be fine.

 

He did find a couple sources of 0w-20, so that will also be an option now.

 

For those that wonder why some would choose Mobil 1 0w40 over their other offerings...understand this

Mobil 1 0w40 is ExxonMobils flag ship oil. It has more approvals for the worlds most demanding specs than any other oil readily available. Its also in actuality a thick 30w more so than a 40w. It has a starting TBN of over 12 which means it can stay in service for more than 20,000 miles...and has the OEM certs to prove it. Its simply their best oil.

None of this is my opinion...its all verifiable if you care to do the research. Id suggest starting at BITOG...

Also...the owners manual for both my 19 taco and my 18 4runner state in clear terms that its recommended to run a heavier oil if your operating at high speeds or towing. Running a 30 or 40wt will NOT void the warranty and is recommend by Toyota in demanding situations.

If you choose to base your oil selection on EPA CAFE standards or emotional decisions based on feelings...be my guest. I choose to base mine on knowledge and used oil analysis...and of course the recommendations of the manufacturer.

Id also note...20wt oil is NOT nor has it caused issues in Toyota engines. It is proven to work and protect engines just fine. Don't want anyone to think I'm knocking 5 or 0w20...because im not.

 

Simple availability of what I choose to think of the highest tier oils.
Id rather use Amsoil 0-30, or 0-20, but when I goto Walmart, Mobil 1 0-40 is on the shelves and those aren't..

From my understanding any oil is fine until poor engine design (or high performance) cause a high pressure spot between pieces of metal. If the pressure required is less than the oil film strength, your golden.
Different oils have different oil film strengths and its not simply based on viscosity (or ZDDP content).

Going full nerd out, I haven't come across heat dissipating capacities of different weight oils, but I choose to focus on wear testing since a few degrees difference won't make or break something (these vehicles should work in both the tundra and the Sahara) whereas metal to metal direct contact will break everything.


Edit, I'm in the buy-it-for-life camp. I'll spend a little more money (and decreased mileage) to achieve a higher factor of safety. On the flip side, I value time a lot hence the above Walmart decision making

Yes, it will be fine. It's exactly what is recommended for your truck "for normal use".
If you drive at extreme speeds or do extreme towing, then reference some of the other posts.

I have a stash of that good stuff going in both my 2gr fks and 1gr fe. 80 mph highways and Texas.

 

If you have the 2.7L, I would run 5W-30 in a pinch. IIRC the first few years of the 2.7L was factory specified for 5W-30.

 

Could you please show where in "Clear Terms" it states that for the 3.5 Tacoma? All I can find is where it says it will void your warranty.

 

My 1gr 4 runner had this tidbit. GR s are all basically the same platform with different auxilleries And upper end.
