KB Voodoo AluMax Rack Install with Diamondback Cover - Photo Heavy

I have a 10 inch premium KBvoodoo with CVT RTT, and it fits under my 7 foot garage

 

Hello @KB Voodoo I also have a Diamondback SE cover and was eying your hi rise cross bars. I know current versions a steel. When aluminum models drop will the veracity of carrying a RTT be effected? Not sure if load rating will be different. What is timeline for aluminum versions? Price?

 

Load rating of the new aluminum bars will be the same. Price is TBD.

 

That is great news! Will you be discontinuing the steel versions or offering both?

 

For the Hi Rise Crossbars, we will always offer both steel and aluminum.

 

Currently the same size but thought about tapping it larger to get a more stout bolt in. What I’m unsure about is would one need to drill it out or can the tap shave out enough to get a 3/8” or so bolt in there?

 

I watched your walk around video the other day, nice setup! I installed the KB Voodoo Tacomax last weekend and overall I’m really happy with it. I would recommend this to anyone, it’s very sturdy and well constructed.

I doubt you will be able to tap the factory nut for a larger bolt, plus even if you did, the location prevents the bracket from sitting flush against the bed due to the bead just aft of the bolt. What I did was remove the bolt so the bracket can sit flush, then I drilled a new hole about half an inch forward of the factory hole. I then used the provided T nut and bolt to secure it in place. There is plenty of room to access everything with the tail lights removed.


I really didn’t want to drill into the bed, but it was the only way I could see mounting it with adequate hardware. I mounted it up originally with the factory bolt and just didn’t think it would cut it due to both the bracket not sitting flush and the small size of the factory bolt.

Just to add for anyone wondering, you would only have to do this if you’re installing the long bed rack on a short bed Tacoma. If you use the short bed rack on the short bed, or the long bed rack on a long bed, the rack will bolt to the accessory rail with the provided T nuts at all four corners.

That is an interesting idea of moving the hole forward. I added a couple of washers behind the tonneau bracket so it would sit flush, but would like to either move it or increase the bolt size. What size drill and tap did you go with?

 

Looking good! Watch out for that cable on your Rotopax as it will eventually rub through the powerdcoating on the rack where it touches.

 

So you drilled a hole just big enough for the bolt, and with the T nut being bigger, you put it in behind from the tailight area and threaded into the T nut. Brilliant, and yes waiting to hear what size bit u used

 

Last month I did 400 miles off road in Death Valley...so it’s definitely already rubbed through. But having the AluMax Rack I don’t really care! Hahaha. Won’t rust

I think it was a 10 mm drill bit, no tap used since I put the nut on the other side of the bed (behind the tail light).

You got it, pretty sure it was a 10 mm drill bit.

The other two nuts that would have gone in the accessory rail for a long bed truck.

 

Ahhhh the nut for the rail. I was thinking those T nuts that have spikes and embed into wood

 

How do you guys deal with not being able to easily access the bed storage when the rack+RTT is mounted above the Diamondback? I really want to love the VooDoo+DiamondbackHD combo, but wouldn't a retractable solution be better for overlanding and other situations wherein you constantly need to access the entire storage area?

Have any of you purchased the Diamondback and a rack, but later regretted this particular limitation of the setup?

 

I don’t have my rack on all the time, only when off roading. Half of my bed has a custom drawer that I use that elimates reaching in and pulling out almost all of the stuff I would access in my bed for camping. The other side has my blue water cubes and my fridge. The cargo drawer holds my recovery gear and random camp stuff (in 2 Plano totes), chairs, firewood, and whatnot. My buddy has a retractable cover but you lose the front 10-12” or so of the bed where the cover rolls up. 99% of the time my truck is in daily driver mode so for me I can reach in for my water cubes when off roading.

This is my complete footprint camping. My chair and roll up coffee table are to the right, but nothing else is on the ground.


When camping I put a water cube up in the cargo drawer and slide it out to get water. I place it so the spout pours right through the cargo drawer slots, then push the drawer back in
