    Holly shit no.

I managed a bike shop for several years while in college, and I've been racing bikes longer than you've been alive.

People would fuck up their bike like no body's business, because "they're easy to work on" then bring them to me and wonder what went wrong (must be a defective part...).

And I'm not even talking suspension or hydraulic disc brakes or anything, just the old crap bikes they inherited from their parents.

I had a guy, now mind you this was on a college campus so presumably they've got some sort of moderately functioning brain, and he was smearing grease on his rims so his brakes wouldn't squeak.

Anything is easy if you know what you're doing. Most people don't know what they're doing.

EDIT: To be fair @what road , I don't really know how old you are. Your "new" avatar confused me. I was thinking you were @BartMaster1234 lol...

Huh. My dad was bigtime into mountain biking before kids took priority. He built his bike from pretty much just an old (hi tech at the time) Schwinn Moab frame, always made it sound easy.

Pretty common, except they are 2 separate racks. One for the truck roof and one for the bed cap.

Like I said, it IS easy if you know what you're doing. Even those with a basic mechanical understanding won't necessarily know about how to properly toe your brake pads to maximize performance and longevity (most people just fiddle with them until they stop squeaking), or how to check for chain stretch, or how to true a wheel and still maintain proper spoke tension, let alone how to build a wheel from scratch.

Back in the Gary Fisher days (the guy, not his bike brand), yeah, it was pretty simple. They just had "ballooners" (essentially beach cruisers). But those guys didn't just see a bike in dad's garage and instantly know how to maintain them to survive in the mountains.

Look at these cute lil vans they use around campus. I think they’re imported.

He did just about everything himself, besides the wheel stuff. I keep meaning to refurbish his bike and get into mtn biking, but my money goes to my truck as of now.

One of my mechanics worked at Target before he worked for me. He was one of their bike assemblers. They literally gave him a crescent wrench, a hammer, and a screwdriver to assemble ALL the bikes. No instructions either.

We would get people with "brand new" bikes from Target or Walmart with handlebars on backwards, brake levers up-side-down. You name it. It was scary.

Yeah, when I was in highschool, so did I. Then, when I got hired at the bike shop, I realized that a lot of what I was doing wasn't quite the "proper" way to do it. Or at least there were methods that took half as long to get the same result.

I used to teach classes for bike repair. It was a lot of fun. I remember one guy who took my class 3 times. THREE TIMES. He still didn't get it at the end so I basically just used his bike as an example to the other people. And remember, this was on a college campus, so we're supposed to believe they have fully functioning brains, lol
