I welded a box to bolt in place under the stereo. There is an all thread that extends behind to the dash cross bar. It’s welded to a thin plate that’s hose clamped to the bar. The right side ram mount is for my iPad and with all the support it doesn’t move in the roughest of terrain.

Ipad mini, motionX off line map app not a nav app, with the dual gps receiver. Download the maps and good to go, no wifi or cell service needed. You can download and save tracks ect... I need to get a good navigation app for traveling when shes driving...
And I can hot spot my phone to use the weather apps ect and use google maps.. I also have a cell phone booster if needed... But I usually put it in airplane mod and just enjoy the woods...............

I recently updated the Backcountry Demo to the Backcountry Pro app. My tracks and everything transferred over fine. However, now when I try to change my map layers to the downloaded offline maps I have saved, nothing will show up. My tracks still show but its just on a white background. I go in and switch back over the map layers to online and not the downloaded ones and the states show up fine? I tried to re download the offline states that I want but still the same result. Anybody run into this trouble?

I didn't do an upgrade, but had something similar. Frankly navigating around in the app can be somewhat confusing regarding layers etc. I'd suggest an email to the developer (lord knows he sends enough initially). He can probably answer that question. when/if you get an answer let us know.

The iPad doesn’t move at all. The mount uses 3m tape to attach to the dash and is on there pretty solid. Even during the 110+deg summer heat of Vegas, the mount did not budge.

A few questions for those using iPads in their trucks.

How much internal storage would you buy if you were able to purchase again? Would get more since there is no expandable storage?

Also, is it a good idea to just pay for the LTE version iPad so you can utilize the built in GPS? The Garmin GLO is $100, and the price difference of the WiFi Only is $150 so saving $50 isn't that appealing considering the Garmin opperates off BT.

I've wanted an iPad for awhile for media consumption but being able to double as an offline GPS system is a great perk. I have factory nav in my truck but I could see myself switching to just the iPad for nav purposes.

So does that plastic piece just pop off so I can fab something up like that then put it back overtop if I ever want to fix it and not have holes drilled into it.

Yes, that panel (small black) just pops in with 3-4 of those little clips. It’s there couse in the access cabs it’s the airbag turn off, so might have a plug into the back but just puts it away if there is one.

I have a ipad mini 3 with LTE (snagged of ebay cheap) (doesnt need to be hooked up) but the data versions have built in gps the wifi ones do not (you can always by an gps too)

I run in CA trail maps overlays in LeadNav or have been using Gaia some as well.

I didn't like GAIA untill a friend convinced me to try the paid version. I'm a huge fan now.

agreed, I have been starting to use it more. In the free version maps cut out since you cant dl them. In CA the trail maps overlay is clutch and I map my routes on leadNav but I do like the use of Gaia. On the fence of the paid version, especially since its a subscription. If it was onetime i would probably buy it. I had to buy LeadNav.

What did you like about the paid version? DL of maps obviously is key.

if you go with iPad 100% get the LTE as its the only one with build in gps. You can score it off ebay if you dont plan to hook it up. It was only $10 a month so I hooked mine up. Get at least 32gb but 64gb - 128gb would be best. I am using a 16gb one I got cheap and I can save 1 or 2 maps and its full with other apps.

I just bought the 11in with LTE and 256gb from Amazon. That should be enough to store music, maps, and some videos when off the grid.

Is the TechDeck the sturdiest mounting solution for these trucks? I'd like to keep the iPad down below the HU and over the shifter.

I use a TechDeck with a 4" arm to a 9" iPad. Vibration is minimal.

It does not block the radio too much - you can still get your hand to the screen. Of course, a lot of the time the iPad faces the passenger seat - having a navigator can be really nice.

I just went with the regular membership and not the premium. I'll have to check but I think regular may have changed to the subscription model. Would have sworn I paid $20 or so one time only. Having the USFS base maps is huge for me along with the ability to download map areas for offline use.
