I had an interesting conversation with a guy I go to church with about Regular Cab small trucks. As most of us know 2014 was the last model year for the Tacoma to have a Regular Cab. Now all the midsized trucks are extended or crew cabs..

I own a Regular Cab S10 so I know the unique elements of owning a regular cab small truck. His argument was that they would become Collector Items because they will be so rare. I said I don't know about collector items because you can still get a full size regular cab domestic truck, however I'm sure there will be guys that will seek them out for a good time.

I love the regular cab however planning on having kids in the next few years with my wife its Crew Cab only for me for a LONG time.

I looked for a single cab 4x4 second gen taccoma. They are hard to find ill give you that. But i do not see them being collectors items. Maybe in 50 years. Some of them will still be going around then.

If toyota would have put the 4.0 in the single cab, made it 4x4, and an sas, they would have sold like hotcakes.

Actually...the reason Toyota didn't make them in that configuration is because they knew they would not sell like hotcakes...people like us who would appreciate a truck like that are few and far between in the grand scheme of things, and those of us that would actually buy one are even fewer.

Toyota did make a V6 regular cab 4x4 Tacoma from 1995 - 1997, and they stopped because they didn't sell well at all. I'd give my left nut for one in mint condition but unfortunately, most don't feel the same way

Are you in business analysis and marketing at toyota?

You have no idea how many people I know that still drive 1st gens and toyota 4 runners with 22r's because of thier size, and solid axles.

Yeah, I'm sure its so many that Toyota is kicking themselves for not having offered those configurations for the last 30 years...

the main reason single cab trucks stopped being made was to simplify production.
I'm sure your vast experience in business analysis, and marketing would have told you this

I might add one thing here. The reason they dropped the regular cab was to simplify production due to the low demand.

Don't get me wrong, I love regular cab trucks, but they just don't sell well enough to justify the extra cost and complexity of specialized parts, tooling and manufacturing.

I wouldn't say collectors items. Hell the hot rods of the 80s haven't become collectors items when in the 80s 60s and early 70s cars were already becoming collectors items. I can see some special edition vehicles like the Dodge Ram Vsomethingorother becoming one because it was the viper stuff shoved in a ram. Toyota just makes far too many Tacomas for them to become collectors items even the dismal #s that the regular cab had. Also trucks are not typically even the old school one the "collectors" items. There are some that folks search out because they are cool.

I was thinking the old 7 window chevies and the 68-72 SB chevies, 56 fords, early gmcs but yep the same track. I forgot about the old split windows.

    You are correct.

Yes, it's called a niche market

I had a '98 Sonoma regular cab. Was a good budget friendly truck for my purposes. But I wanted more secure, dry space, and didn't want a topper, nor a more door.

So I opted for the AC Tacoma in a 5 lug. Works perfectly for my purposes.

I do suspect that 'some' 2wd regular cabs will be sought as drag race platforms in the EV world. :D

We are in the wrong market for Regular cabs. Frankly who cares, you can't let your kid drive in this country anymore due to nanny time. Maybe on your own property. Easy to drive and learn trucks are gone here.
Too many folks want a lifted Corolla sized truck with a bed. There's all kinds of social reasons beyond the material, if you work at an enterprise and you drive something other than a 4 door without being the "big cheese"... bye bye promotion. Marriage premium is also real. Image is everything, enter the mall crawler.

Please. More coffee before your next ramble.

PS. if you aren't getting a promotion because of what you drive, you are either working in the wrong place or just looking for an excuse.

Will they become collector's items? Yes and no. After they age to a certain point, virtually every vehicle becomes a collector's item, as long as it's in good condition or can be restored to good condition. So yes, eventually a single cab Tacoma will be regarded as something collectible, just as the 80's models are now, as they age past a certain point and there are fewer and fewer of them around. But I don't think that they'll be any more of a collectible than an access cab would be. Think of it as a 60's Mustang. At this point, any 60's Mustang is a collectible, even the 6 cylinder dog-o-matic models. Obviously some (V8 fastbacks, for example) are worth more than others, and it'll be the same case with the Tacoma's that last long enough. But there's no way of predicting what public opinion will be, about which models being more or less desirable than others

Had a regular cab ranger and a friend at the same time with a regular cab 1st gen. -

I much prefer my 2nd gen access cab. Elbow room. Recline and legroom. Etc. I’m tall so also biased about the space constraint. Much better daily driver.

That said, regular cab 4x4 would be a fun toy.

I thought they stopped that because they would roast tires too easily lol

Edit: either way the people driving single cab 4x4s definitely aren’t selling them very often, I look for shits and grins and there’s never more than 5 within 200 miles from me... I am in MO tho
