It got real...Baxter adapter, spin-on filter, oil change.

According to Baxter, the o-rings on the adapter are good for life and never have to be changed once it is installed. It is a high quality part, very well finished and probably why it is $200. Just another point; when changing the spin on you definitely get some oil coming down so I always remove the skid plate and have the drain pan in place. Also a lot easier to get filter wrench up there.

For an oil related failure, yes.

 

Looks like something I will do in the future, I prefer real oil filters.

Did this setup add much to the oil capacity? Did you fill the filter before spinning it on?

One more, what are the numbers for the correct oil filter?

 

I do because it is real easy. Fill up the filter and then 6 qts to the pan. As I mentioned, I use the WIX #51348, but OP used the Toyota filter from the 2nd generation. Both have more filter area than the cartridge but WIX has more room between the filter and skid plate. Always used WIX filters and related write-ups confirm the decision.

You can use both, some brands will be a heavy 20wt (Redline) and others a light 30wt (Mobil 1) and are close in weights. (Not the same oil, add pack, etc though)

 

I realize that this mod is mainly for convenience...and I understand that. But some people seem to be implying that cartridge filters are somehow inferior to spin-ons. Do people think there's magic fairy dust in a spin-on? It's basically the same material in both. You just can't see it in a spin-on.

This is nothing new. 2GRs have been running a cartridge since 2004. In fact, decades ago all vehicles had some sort of cartridge filter. Spin-ons were actually a trickle down from racing technology.

We've just come full circle.

 

Can Baxter make an adapter that puts the filter back up at the top where it was really convenient?

Yeah....that's certainly a convenient feature of the single VVT-i 1GR.

 

No. Spin on filters are just what we're used to. They also allow you to add more filter mass if you feel you need to. Cartridges are only 1 size by design.

 

I’m not sure why some think the spin on filter is better. I can buy 3 filters from Toyota for $4.00 apiece. They come with all the o rings and a drain valve. Makes for a less messy oil change and it’s cheap. Many manufacturers are using this set up I’ve never seen a problem unless the cap has been over tightened.
What am I missing?

Notice the media? Looks nearly identical...because it is. The only difference is that one has a can permanently surrounding it and the other one you can separate the media and "can".

 

No, no...I get that. That's why I said I realize it's a convenience thing. Totally understand that and respect it.

Just dispelling the idea that there's somehow something superior about a spin-on's function.

I've been doing cartridge filter changes on all manner of Toyota vehicles since the early days. There are 2 basic things that will prevent future headaches.

1. Buy the proper

$18 Toy640 Assenmacher Specialty Tools TOY 640 Oil Filter Socket Wrench for Toyota/Lexus

Toy640 housing tool. A can wrench that almost fits can potentially damage the housing...particularly the plastic ones.



2. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the housing. There is no gasket. It's sealed by an o-ring. Therefore torque is not needed. Just a light snug.

 

I wish Toyota service people would read your point #2! My cartridge housing was on so tight from the factory I actually broke the housing tool trying to get it off. With the spin on it is just hand tightened so no wrench to install.

 

At my last free dealer oil change I asked tge service guy to please not put the filter housing on too tight. He said "we will try, but i can't guarantee it".
