Maybe in BC but in Alberta it’s hard to find a Tacoma that didn’t rust away. Most of the older 2nd gens here have been retired due to frame rot where you still see plenty of domestics from that time period on the road. I fluid film my Tacoma every fall just in case but I don’t do that with my F150. I don’t feel like Toyota quality is what it used to be on the models that are made in North America.

Maybe so but still much better that the Taco and has much better reliability and resale than the domestics. Not just the rough ride, got tired of the drive train. I would have to be desperate to buy a domestic.

Maybe so. But i've driven a Hilux in the Fiji Islands and the 2.8 diesel is a better motor in every way. Its a honest transmission without all the wacky software that the taco has. And loads of low end torque. I test drove a taco for first time a few days ago and was unimpressed. The early shifting and gear searching on a level road traveling only 50 mph did not impress. The hilux is a bit lighter/smaller truck. But very capable. I truly wish they offered it in North America. Or at the very least put the 2.8 into the taco. I'd buy that today in either case.

The 2.8 as it is doesn’t comply with the newer Diesel emission regulations in North America. I doubt we will ever see it here. Toyota doesn’t seem willing to invest in the changes to make it viable for the North American market.

That being said the most significant competitor to the Hilux, the global Ranger, is coming here in January and will be equipped with a turbo gas engine. If it performs well maybe Toyota will offer something with a bit more pep on the next Tacoma.

Yes I've been keeping my eye on the upcoming ranger. May even buy one. I did own one in Fiji with the 3.2 diesel and that ride/performance was much better then the test drive i had a few days ago with the limited Taco. But already Ford is claiming more torque then the taco and I already know the turbo will probably do better at 5000 feet (Albuquerque). It will probably perform close to Fords 2.7 ecoboost. If so, Toyota will have a problem on their hands. I still remember the T6 Ranger handing Toyota their arse when the T6 was introduced. Its why Toyota refreshed the hilux so fast. Either way, Toy really needs to refresh the motor/trans on the taco. That test drive was horrid.

As for the 2.8 they just need to fit it with the urea system to burn off the NOx. Chevy did that with their 2.8 duramax. The Colorado does not have urea in Fiji either. Its just sad that Toyota makes such great diesels but refuse to offer one in the states. The Prado is another great example of a great diesel powered SUV. The only other engine they got is the 2.0 turbo they put in the Lexus NX. But that would probably be too weak. If they want to stick with gas, they will have to come up with a completely new motor. Obviously Toyota is up against a wall trying to get this 3.5/6 combo to work but's they seem to be failing miserably by many accounts. Including mine.

Speak for yourself. You really are triggered. Just because someone doesn't like the truck you drive, doesn't mean they don't like you personally. The way some of you people are acting, you'd think you define yourselves solely by the truck you drive. Time for some of you to take a step back and re-evaluate...

Did tour the western part of the country in my Taco this year. Quite comfortably luxurious. Better than any car I ever had. But, then I don't have a candy ass :bananadance:

VW had a great diesel here. The fallout from that debacle has probably scared Toyota out of bringing theirs in.
I had a Ram with the 5.9, great motor but when things go wrong with those diesels (even the Cummins) the bill can be staggering.

Toyota's compared to F150, I have owned long term 5 trucks and now a 6th and not one as ever been in the shop, two went well over 100,000 miles. The F150 lived in the shop. When someone did not see my truck, they knew where it was.

I think it depends which model. My test drive on a limited taco was pretty good. Good steering feel and the ride was pretty good. I liked the layout up front. The truck looked nice. Back seat was a joke. And the transmission was utter rubbish IMO. But I've heard the ride can vary allot from sr5, offroad trd etc.. So you have that at play as well.

When your overseas those Hilux's are everywhere and they are bullet proof. My mom owned a Prado and that was the best SUV I ever drove. Like I said, Toy makes dead pan reliable diesels. The best. The ranger 3.2 5 cylinder is also a great diesel and very powerful. Yes VW really screwed things up. Now Audi, BMW and mercedes have quit offering diesels. VW literally had hundreds of thousands of diesel cars in storage all over the country.

I didn’t say anything about buying a domestic. Your only complaint in your original post was the rough ride. Well the Tundra is know for it’s rough ride. If there were other reason that’s great, just silly to say the Tundra rides better then a Tacoma.

I'd like to see a diesel tundra too. That'd be sweet

I've done two, several thousand mile roadtrips in the Taco and it was fantastic.

Hahaha, excellent... I guess we have opposing views as to the definition of luxury (that’s ok).

p.s., the lack of comfort affects my back more than my “candy ass”, which I’d rather have than a “sour puss”

Traded my 2014 TRD OR Tacoma for a SR5 4X4 Tundra. No regrets at all. Fuel mileage isn't great, but it's actually not too far from what I was getting in my Tacoma.

I kept both of my Gen I Tacomas, I will never get rid of them.

I actually loved my M/T Tacoma. I just needed to upgrade to more towing power and space for my kids.....And I personally wasn’t going to stray from Toyota. Even though the Tundra is ancient I felt like it was the best choice for me. Granted I’m just a Toyota fan.
