Dont Flame the Noob! Seriously need some help and advice.

Hey guys whats up,

I got a 2010 Base Model Toyota Tacoma 4x4 in silver, its a 2.7 5 speed 4 cyl.

Now my question is i have been doing alot of research, coming up with things like the Deckplate mad and reading on the newer models it dont work. Also alot of discussion about the 2.7 having 2 air filters.

basically what i am looking for is to get a little better gas milage with the truck i am already getting 22 MPG which is really good i know. and bump up performance a tad (i know its not gonna increas much at all because it is a 4 banger).

So if someone could point me in the direction in which i should go that would be great!

 

I don't know why the deckplate mod wouldn't work for you. I have a 2010 and plan on doing it soon...

 

do you suggest that or buying a full intake system? or is the stock system pretty good as is?

Also where is this Pre-Filter located?

if you open the box its the white filter in the lid. Secondary airfilter. its an activated carbon filter that absorbs eccess fumes when you shut your truck off.

i removed my secondary filter and added a magnaflow catback and i consistently get 24-25. 3mpg gain from before. After the catback i notice way more low and mid range power. make going up hills easier. i noticed right away that this one hill i always had to hit in 4th i took in 5th and i couldnt idle in 1st without the truck stalling now i can...

If It's not broken, don't fix it.
Toyota spent a lot of money trying to make the truck as fuel efficient as possible, and horsepower.
The best thing you can do is improve your driving habits, to try to improve MPG's, and get a scan gauge 2 to help you on that. As well as keeping up on your maintenance.

 

you can always remove the secondary air filter from the intake. its an emmisions thing anyway. if you have emissions inspections..take it out carefully so you can put it back before you go in. no dyno has been done on the 4cyl...but alot of folks claim gains, unlike with the v6...dyno was done and no increase or anything. and get a good dry flow filter....like the afe pro dry s.

 

thanks for the input guys so i am gathering that the Factory air intake is Already Best just put in a High Flow filter and take out the "pre-filter"

how do you all feel about the exhaust system? pretty free flowing or could it use an upgrade?

 

thats probably the best and cheapest approach. "cold air intakes" just dont do enough to justify their high cost...to me anyway. for the exhaust.....you can do headers and such, but you wont have a huge gain....should be at least noticeable tho. if you want to swap mufflers....try a dynomax super turbo muffler.

 

This. The AFE and secondary filter removal is probably the best you can get for the buck on the 4 bangers... at least from what I've read around here. I love my AFE on my v6... seems to breath a bit better (could be in my head no dyno to test)... if nothing else it's the last $55 I'll spend on air filters for the truck, saving a butt-ton in cash on the long run.

Yes.

 

If you drive to conserve fuel, the turbo will be increasing efficiency giving you more power so less fuel used. It's not a parasitic loss like superchargers since it's exhaust driven, not belt driven.

However, I'd defiantly lose mpg's cause I'd be on the throttle. But it CAN save you some gas... just never enough to warrant the up front cost.

 

I don't know about the secondary filter removal, but I installed the K&N intake in my 4-cyl and it made a big difference. The throttle response is much better and I gained about 1 to 1.5 mpg. Although it's not much, over time the intake will pay for itself. I later installed a magnaflow cat-back which, when combined w/ the intake, improved gas mileage another 1 mpg. Therefore, after these mods, I get about 26-27 mpg on the highway. I drive my manual pretty aggressively, but I still get ~23 mpg in town.

Don't forget though, if you add a performance mod, you'll typically negate its mpg improvements because you'll tend to drive it harder....I know I do!

Oh, one more thing...I'm pretty sure that K&N's website has dyno charts for the 4-cyl

 

who makes the supercharger for the 4cyl?

 

You had issues beyond an air filter if that was happening.

 

it would be really jerky and stall if there was any grade. After the catback the truck runs awesome. I out dragged a stock reg cab prerunner about a month ago...i know drag racing a tacoma is stupid but he was going to cut me off. i denied his attempt.
