OP, did you end up taking it in to the dealer? What did they say? I just did the 1st change on my 18 and I had no observable metal in the filter at 5600 miles.

I did, they determined it to be from the dipstick rubbing on the tube then the metal shavings sticking to the dipstick. Apparently it's not the first time they have had someone come in with that same issue. I ordered a test kit from Blackstone and am going to send in an oil sample to get tested just to be sure. At least now either way its documented and if there is a bigger issue going in hopefully the oil analysis will show it.

Mine did it for free at 5K. They will do it, they just have to mark it off.

How did they come to this determination? Did they run a camera scope down your dipstick tube and find scratches? I can’t imagine a camera would be small enough to get in there.

They used a different dipstick that went in much easier than mine, mine you really have to force in to get through the tube. On the one they used there were no shavings with repeated dips, they also said on mine they could see where the dipstick was getting ground down from rubbing in the tube.

I scheduled an oil change for next week and during that they will look at the filter and the oil to make sure it isn't a bigger issue. They offered to do that when I took it in the first time but I wanted to be 100% sure the oil I am going to be sending out for analysis is from my truck.

I knew this was the case as I posted earlier in this thread. Do a test.. Quickly insert stick, you will feel it hang up, get metal shavings. Take your time and push it in slow without hanging up, no metal shavings.

Yeah plus the dealer also said if they inserted the dipstick halfway, not even touching the oil but still able to get the dipstick to get hung up, pull it back out , there were shavings on it.

Are they replacing tube and stick? Mine has this same issue, I've tested numerous times. I'm the only one who will service my truck, so I don't see it being a problem.

Relax...shavings are normal in the first couple of oil changes. Just change the oil and enjoy your truck. If it rides fine then it IS fine. Its normal to get anxious about these things when you get a new car. These trucks are well-made, rock-solid vehicles. You have one of the finest volume production trucks on the road. Just enjoy it.

A lot of posts on here make you think everyone is paranoid. It's not shavings in the oil, its from the dip stick scraping the tube when inserting.

I don’t think you read the whole thread, particularly the post where the OP said the dealership told him the dipstick was causing the issue.

New motors are reportedly "broken in" by the time they are delivered to the dealer and do not need the initial oil changed after "break in" period (usually the first 1000 miles). However, I always change my oil after the first 1000 miles or so of a new engine since worst case scenario is that I wasted $ needlessly changing the oil. I changed mine at 1000 miles and no shavings.

I would definitely bring it to the dealer to document the metal shavings in the oil and then have it changed, run it for another 1000 miles and continually checking for more shavings until it is clean. Likely your engine will be fine but you should not be running oil with metal in it.

Would I be correct in assuming that none of these filings should have made it to the engine, having been removed by the filter?

I’ve been wrong before so i’m not gonna call Dealer-BS just yet, but I find it hard to believe that can happen without cutting the tip off your dipstick with an old chop saw and then banging it back in the tube raw-like.
I’m an almost 50 year old mechanic/welder and i’ve never seen or heard of this happening. Any techs here (especially Toyota or Lexus) that have pulled out dipstick tubes and found this problem?
I’m interested to see what the lab has to say.
BTW, I pulled out my own dipstick and jammed it back in at different orientations and have seen no signs of metal filings.

I mean, I have seen various different engines with all kinds of metal shavings during the first 10k miles. But no, I've never seen a dipstick shave itself to while being inserted and pulled out. That being said, is it so far fetched? Some of these dipsticks are a real PITA to put back in. And they screeeeetch. This has been happening on vehicles for like....ever

Plus, the shavings look magnetized to the dipstick. In any case, none of that is cause for alarm, someone turn that absurd thing off.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
OP should do his own oil change. Check out the level of flakes in the oil and filter... I just don't see how this can happen from a dipstick unless they made the stick or tube from the wrong material or it wasn't heat treated properly.

That seems like more shavings than what the dipstick tube would give. Either way, small shavings = no worries.
