So I can't decide if this is site is going to be the best or worst thing that ever happened to me...or both...

That said, I bought a 2016 off road a couple weeks ago - it's my first truck (and yes, I was already purchasing stuff for it before I'd even completed the sale). I registered for toyota.com to see if I could find out any TSB's performed (or even look up which TSB's are available) and don't see any.

I also couldn't find any basic idiot-proof info on what specifically a TSB is/how to look them up/should I even apply them/how to get the dealer to perform one/etc?

Specifically I'm interesting in the shifting reprogramming (I think it's TSB 0062-18?), but would also be interesting to see what others are out there that I may want.

Problem is, I'm not quite sure where to start. Any help would be awesome.

Welcome to the forum. Use the search feature in the upper right corner, keep it simple like “TSB” and the threads will be listed for you. I had the tranny TSB done on my 17 and it made it drive much better than before. You must tell the dealer that you are having the issue that the TSB covers and then usually they have to confirm it before they will do it but some here have reported that their dealer did it without any fuss. Good luck!

A TSB is a manufacturer-recommended repair procedure for a specific problem. It only appplies if your vehicle is exhibiting the symptoms/problem described in the TSB. You can't typically walk into a dealer and demand that they perform a given TSB.

    Yep

And TSBs are free if you’re under warranty. They do cost if you’re out of warranty.

They’re basically a recall while under warranty.

    Both lol...

    Welcome to the forum

If you're into doing stuff yourself, may I suggest you also get your hands on a scan tool or OBD dongle/App. I use the Carista Bluetooth OBD dongle and OBD Fusion app for IOS. Good for reading codes/ Calibration versions etc and monitoring a shitload of ECM data if you buy the Toyota specific PID pack.

If you get to the point where a dealer won't do a TSB involving a flash reprogram and you want to update anyway.. well it can be done at home (accepting the risk of bricking your ECM of course).

Here's a link with complete info on updating your ECM with Toyota calibration files. No need to dig through, it's all right there on page 1. Note that it was created with manual trans trucks in mind, but only the actual calibration files (.CUW) will be different for your auto Taco:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/software-update-for-the-manual.562550/

Note - you can't flash the wrong file, the software checks for that. you'll get an error!

For the naysayers - yep, I've done it. Updated from 04B10 to 04B13. No bench racing.

Not really. A recall applies to every vehicle within a given VIN range. A TSB only applies to vehicles exhibiting the symptoms.

Are you talking about the initial 25k Tacoma care warranty (or whatever it's called)? If so, I'm barely out of that at this point.

As you start looking at the TSBs, there is a section about warranty information. The 0125-18 for instance lists the powertrain warranty which is 96mo/80k miles. So you should be good for applicability but you will need to convince the dealer your truck exhibits the issue (unlike a recall). Good luck!

you will be finding out about a lot of quirky issues you would have never noticed but after spending time on this forum you will notice them.
many times i see people parking there 3rd gen in a parking lot and i ask how they like the truck. they respond " it is great, love it" then i ask if they know about this forum and they say no!

It's definitely already caused damage to my wallet... And that's just the cosmetic changes I've made to the truck.
