To each there own, but there is no way I would pay money to revert back to a spin on.

    1) It cost more, not only for the filter, but the adapter is very expensive.

    2) Same filter performance. One could argue a slightly increased filtering capacity IF you're running a large filter but then its going to be sticking down quite far due to the adapter.

    3) There is significantly more mess when changing a spin on vs. cartridge filter.

    4) and of course, more waste.

Is it worth it? Thats the $200 question for you to answer.

Yes, each to his own. The spin-on does require a drain pan underneath, but the flow is very easy to control. What I like about the adapter/spin on's is that the oil change can be done quicker and since they are not torqued down with a wrench, little concern about over tightening or cracking the plastic housing. Having owned a number of Jeep JK's and the trouble with that cartridge filter, I didn't want that again with my Taco.

this is exactly what happens to the 2.7l 4 cylinder, crack the filter and all the old oil comes gushing out around the edges, will be encountering that today.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WDxBE1r7uk

The 2.7L is horrible. It's like the filter sits below a recess in the block that fills with oil. So the filter is completely full of oil and there's about cup extra above it that all comes running out when you remove the filter. It's fucking horrible and I hate it so much.

jup, I will be doing that in an hour or so when it starts to warm up out, I do methodically, drain pan till trickle, move catch pan to under the oil filter, crack filter let drain as much as I can, then finger tip turn off filter(not easy with slick oily fingers) you can only use one arm/hand thru the whole procedure, I don't jack up the truck

There is always a easier solution on changing the oil.
-take it to the dealer for free oil change
-go to Giffy Lube for cheap oil change

Use a larger size zip-lock bag (step up from a sandwich bag) around the filter. Worked like a charm over the years I owned 2.7s

Yea, I've been doing that. It still takes some finesse to not make a mess. That rhymes :anonymous:

On my 2004 2.4L, I used an old cottage cheese container for this. I loosened the filter, grabbed the container, held it under the filter with my pinky finger while I unscrewed the filter with my thumb and forefinger of the same hand. When the filter came off, I pinched the plastic container to keep it from tipping. Did it this way for 230k miles. All bubbles, no troubles. Only the tip of my thumb/forefinger got oily.

Never said it was a Toyota only issue.
Change is required, doesnt really matter what Toyota wants.

Look, all I'm saying is that I'm excited to see what Toyota does next. I like Toyota, and I have a lot of faith in them. What's wrong with that?

Nobody stabs a hole in their spin on to drain it first? Should make for an easier stream to catch instead of multiple from around the gasket. Pro tip... make sure you can loosen it first so you don't have a filter stuck on with a hole in the bottom.

Nope. I've had occasion to not be able to replace the filter at the moment (Wrong filter in box, new filter damaged).

Well I change my own oil and the Baxter spin on adapter works great for me. Others can do what they want, I am still happy with the the $200 mod.

But you could put a block off sandwich plate and run a remote oil filter that would take one like a diesel truck would and have even more oil filtering capacity then run an oil cooler if you are really feeling froggy. I get your sentiments though and there are positives and negatives to everything. Just have to make those choices for yourself.
