Lucy’s is pretty good, it’s a bunch of high end chefs doing their spin on down home cooking. Lots of different spices and techniques that can improve or hinder depending on perspective. I’m a meat and potatoes kind of guy so it got a little fancy for my super simple palette.

Since the only requirement is a $75 dollar FCC license fee and no test I'm thinking about getting one for the wife. I am covered with my HAM license I believe.

Call Sign KC3MOY !! Issued today!!

My company has a office in Houston. What's it like there?

I do know they were hit pretty hard with the hurricane and some of our employees lost some property but none were injured. Is it flat flat or are there any elevated areas within an hour drive? We drive an hour now so it wouldn't kill us. It's just a dream but for the most part we are kinda ready to switch things up and move away from the snow. Maybe a condo so we don't have any chores. Likely never happen but it's nice to dream. The wife can work anywhere, but her company also has locations in Texas.

Yea, I thought it was just one fee. My HAM License was free. The organization "NEMARC" http://www.nemarc.org/vetesting.html that tests in my area doesn't charge a fee.

But I would like to get a GMRS for the wife and then maybe a CB for the truck too. Cover all my bases so I am completely ready for anything on the trail.

Houston is flat but definitely have hills within about an hour and a half drive or so in what is affectionately called the hill country.

Hot and humid summers with mild winters.

Houston itself is a swamp so flooding can be expected with heavy or prolonged rains.

The only elevations in Houston are the highway overpasses.

    Things to know about Houston.

    1. We drive to Austin to wheel. Most elevation changes we have are overpasses.
    2. When the Rodeo is in town NOTHING else matters.
    3. You can drive an hour in almost any direction and still be in Houston.
    4. Construction. Lots of people means lots of traffic so they're constantly expanding the roadways.
    5. Depending on areas you could flood several times a year. Harvey wasn't a good gauge as to what would/would not flood. When buying ask about what it looked like during Hurricanes Alicia and Ike.
    6. We do not generally get snow so people get really extra when it snows. Roads/schools/businesses close and everyone will be out taking photos of/in it.
    7. If you go to Galveston make sure to observe the tread lightly practices and STAY OFF THE DUNES. Galveston PD does not play around.
    8. Mardi Gras in Galveston is nuts, the same goes for the Lonestar Bike Rally expect traffic delays
    9. Houston drivers do not care. If it comes down to them letting you over or you wrecking...brace for impact.
    10. For all the bad this city(like most other Texas towns)has an immense sense of pride. During hard times we have proven we can/will band together. Sometimes that pride is obnoxious, but it is part of what drives us to achieve greater things every day.

I have thought of moving several times, but Houston is home.

Folks get snorkels for school zones. It rains professionally. Landscape is small hills and farms outside the city until you hit the other side of San Antonio and Austin (Texas Hill Country) and then it's a roller coaster of awesome. Mosquitoes go on vacation to Houston when they get bored eating people in Louisiana. Their traffic flows like an old cop's blood pressure - arteries are large, overloaded, and clogged. When folks in Austin are ready to flip out over Austin traffic, they check Houston and calm down.

    Still...

Food's good, people are cool, and crime isn't really any worse than anywhere else (with avoidable exceptions). Gas is cheaper than all other major metropolitan areas its size, and the cost of living is lower too. Two airports to choose from, but that would make sense for the fourth largest city in the country. Per https://www.moving.com/tips/the-top-10-largest-us-cities-by-population/

    4. Houston, TX
    Population:
    2,296,224

Nickname: “Space City,” “Bayou City,” “H Town” and “The Big Heart.”

Why You Should Move: Houston’s stable job market, diverse economy and affordable neighborhoods, make this Texas city a popular choice for young professionals and families. In years past, the city was ranked number one by Forbes for paycheck worth, and was included in Forbes list of “Best Places for Business and Careers.”

Population Notes: According to World Population Review, Houston makes up the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugarland metropolitan area, which is the 5th largest in the United States.

Median Home Price: The median listing price for a home in Houston is $282,000.
