Are you going with the 7th injector kit or AEM Fic6 with larger injectors?

All this supercharger talk is new for me, so I'm making a plan to get the most power/torque for the money. It's an expensive mod, but seems to be hands down the highest reviewed...do you think it's worth the cost to port & polish?

I think we all do. Keep a spare set and send the burnt out ones in for warranty and get a new set in a few weeks. Repeat every time they go out. I think I got 7 months out of a set. Didn't know about the warranty at that point though.

 

Despite what people are saying, the 7th injector kit is much more user friendly and improved over the 6 inj kit if you have a non egr tacoma (dont quote me but I believe the 01-04s dont have an egr valve). The 6 injector kit was the original and the 7th injector kit was the improved and easier on the end user. Regardless what you do, the extra fuel is essential to a nice running supercharged engine.

 

It is not "new".

The controller for the 7th injector kit from URD is ancient. If you want to make changes to the tune, you need windows XP plus a damn serial port. Who the fuck uses those anymore?

The AEM FIC6 is usb and and much more up to date. Way easier to tune and with some time, you'll get way more power out of it and it'll run way better.

I wouldn't get either URD kit. Old news, both of them. Solid "meh" for working right. Support from URD is iffy as well.

The only advantage the 7th kit has is it is still pretty close to PnP for the most part..but likely won't solve all ping issues and will not be as effective.

 

Picked up a new drivers side sway bar link. Considering the clunking over bumps and the fact that I can move it with my fingers, Id say its done for. Passenger side was replaced when I did my lift and its rock solid. Just debating on wether or not I wanna replace it today.

 

The 7th injector kit from URD has been around for over a decade, maybe even close to two decades by now. In that time it hasn't been updated much if at all.

I have the 7th injector kit from URD, it solved about 75% of my pinging issues but they are still there, just not as bad as before. @Blackdawg is right, if you want to custom tune it then you have to have access to some pretty old software that isn't easily/readily available anymore. URD doesn't seem very interested in modernizing the kit.

In hindsight, I wish I had done a methanol injection setup instead, but the one thing the URD kit has going for it is that it's fairly easy to conceal...and in CA that's important because any fuel mods will make you fail a smog test. The only fuel mod that is/was CARB approved was the TRD 7th injector kit that Toyota used to sell but has been discontinued for several years.
The URD kit is not CA legal but I managed to get away with it last time I got smogged/inspected. The fuel line is the only part that stands out but I just wrapped it in a vacuum hose so it looks like all the other hoses in there.

 

Talk to @1997tacomav6 ...he ported and polished his supercharger and I believe got some really good results out of it

 

Thanks for taking time to explain the pinging and such. So would you buy the URD supercharger + AEM FICA6 + methanol kit, what about increasing the injectors and what not? do you bore larger holes or buy a larger size? Back when we rode 3 wheeler, we'd bore the fuel jets and make it run hotter.

 

honestly I would just start with the supercharger, you might not need any supporting fuel mods at all...some people don't. After all, the supercharger was designed to be a "bolt on" mod that required nothing else to make it run right...it just turned out that many of us needed supporting fuel mods as well. But some don't, I know some guys on here that just have the supercharger and nothing else and it runs great.

Don't do what I did though and skip on the AFR gauge...you should have a boost and an AFR gauge right off the bat, it'll tell you if you're running lean or too rich, or just right. If you're lean, or if you want to increase your boost (smaller pulley, etc.) then start looking at fuel mods.

If I had the ability to run whatever I wanted, I would do the AEM FICA6 kit and maybe add a methanol kit to that if I needed it. Out here in the southwest, heat soak with these superchargers is very real and kills their performance pretty quickly. Meth kits really help keep the temps down.

I have like a 4 month window every year here in CA where I can really have fun with the blower, when the weather is cold/cool and my pinging issues are next to nil. Once summer hits I have to be a lot more careful.

 

Yes to meth/water kit. That with the AEM is the best setup IMO. What Im going for

 

This is absolutely awesome information. I read about the 1st gen 3.4l superchargers getting hot and wanted to ask if there's an intercooler that can be installed between the SC and engine...or if the meth kit will keep the temps lower.

 

No intercooler. Meth kit will help a lot.

 

I think I saw somewhere on here once where a guy custom fabbed an intercooler onto his 3.4l supercharger but it looked awful lol. But ya no intercoolers, just run a meth kit...URD claims their 7th helps with cooling but in my experience it doesn't much if at all.

going to NA supra injectors is plenty. Think its like 318cc. Plug in play too. From the 7mgte I believe.

 

If you can find them the the stock 01-04 3RZ injectors are 330cc at 3 bar and cheap as hell

 

idk if those swap into the 5vz. Do they?

 

Same physical size, harness should be the same too.
