Hi guys, Ive been working for a Contractor for about 5 years now, and we do mostly remodeling. I havent gotten a raise in almost 2 years, and Im now one of his lead Carpenters. But he hasnt given me a raise or anything. I know I should be making close to 16-18 Per Hour. But Im still at 12. which is close to what our labor's make.
We are verry small, just 3 guys and the owner. And he's a great guy, but I dont want to ask him for a raise. Just seem's rude.

Ive been thinking about going to school, and Taking some Construction Management classes. or something similar. which I will do soon. But I just dont know what too do. He knows Im planning on going to school. And its sortta a hint that Im not making enough... But any tips or help would be great. Thanks!

Ask him for a raise. You gotta do what you gotta do for you and yours.

I geuss I could do that. Bc I really dont want to just look for a new job. Bc he's a great boss, and Contractor. I just hate asking, it just seems wrong. For some reason....

Time for a chat... tell him you'd hoped by now to be making more than you are and cooperatively lay out a plan with him that will get you there. If you both stick by the plan then it's gravy... if you do and he doesn't then it's time to look elsewhere. I've been down the road of father/son businesses when the offspring are total slackers... it's usually a no-win.

Thats a good idea... Yeah, I plan on getting out when I can. But for now I just need to make enough so that I can save up for a place of my own.

Find a new job. When he retires you'll be working for the lazy sons.

You can't get in much worse of a situation then being the only non-family in a family business. You are always lowest priority no matter what you do.

My dads a contractor. We do the same thing as you. There are four of us workers. But it's the opposite. I'm the hardest working one and that's why I make more. But if another one of the guys with us picked up the slack then I don't see why my dad wouldn't give him a raise. But they don't. You are the opposite and have been working hard. Is there a reason he hasn't given it to you? Is he doing ok financial wise?

I would just ask. Tell him you like working for him and don't plan on leaving.

Well we were slow for a little while, and I had maybe 2-3 weeks off. But we have picked back up and we alot of jobs lined up. So I dont think its a financial reason, I dont think.
I geuss I can wait a little while longer and then Im ganna have to talk to him about it.
    Thanks for the help guys!
