It got real...Baxter adapter, spin-on filter, oil change.

I've checked mine several times and have changed it twice since owning the truck. The next change will be filter and a complete flush. There are some of us that actually do these things to make sure the truck will last as long as possible.

 

We got plenty of one gallon filters if u need one.

 

But But but it adds functionality and keeps the carpet from getting ruined

 

Just put fresh 75 90 in mine last weekend.

 

I ran the amsoil adapter on my old 7.3 and dual filters it ended up being almost 5 qrts in those 2 filters.

 

Lol wut? I take it you've never changed the filter on the 4.0 or even a 2AZ for that matter.

I should have been more specific. For comparative purposes, I assumed the reader would deduct we were talking about vertical filters. Yes, they make more mess.

By design, the 4.0 is intended to catch its spill-off, which works great. Not so much with a 3.5 and the vertical design. The 2TR 2.7 is in the same boat.

 

Along with many other engines with vertical filters. To add some cars have cartridge filters with no drain plug or the drain plug is seized and are vertical like the 3.5 those make even bigger mess than a normal spin on. Just some food for thought.

My 3RZ has the same filter housing as the 2TR. Just gotta get the drain pan under it, crack it lose and let it drain before taking it off. No real mess usually. My 22RE isnt messy either, its mounted sideways on the side of the block, all about having the drain pan under it.

Imo, those cartridge filters are more of a hassle than they need to be. And they cost the same if not more than the spin on types.

 

Guilty of that on my second oil change. I put it on with a wrench the first go round. Ended up having to put my new oil in it and having the dealer remove it. Was an expensive lesson.

 

I tried every tool in my arsenal. It got crushed so bad, nothing could fit over it.

 

I hear ya, and having changed many 2TR filters over the years I got to be pretty good at not making a mess. I will say though, having had both designs (from European and Domestic) I'll still take the cartridge any day of the week. The only real problem I've seen over the years is people over tightening them. We all know there are plenty of shade tree mechanics that have no business doing something as simple as changing their oil. Those are probably the same guys that tighten that baby down to 75ft/lbs and call it a day - then the housing cracks upon removal.

 

Don't know about anyone else on here, but I had had countless occasions when so called "mechanics" working at dealerships have over tightened a lot of stuff. Most common is lug nuts, but I am pretty sure that many of these guys changing the cartridge filter are using pneumatic tools and not really paying attention to the torque settings. Spin on filters by design are supposed to be hand tightened only. Conclusion for me is do my own maintenance.

 

That’s why there’s a cartridge filter now with a large socket tool that locks onto the outside of the cartridge.

I’ve done similar years ago, had to punch a screw driver through the filter to get it off.

 

What is the PN for the “longest Toyota filter”?

Gosh I miss my 4runner 4.0, changing the oil/filter was a breeze!!!

 

Just did my 4th oil change @ 20K miles with the Baxter and it was a breeze. The spin on filter is so easy and really not messy at all as there is plenty of room under it to put a drain pan. I use the Wix #51348 which works out great. Fill the new filter with oil and put in on, and then 6 quarts up top to get to 6.2.
