I have a 2018 Tacoma Off-Road with about 6K miles. About two weeks ago I was at the gas station and when I went to get in the car the car beeped (door lock/unlock beep) 5+ times and would not unlock. Every time I put my hand on the door handle the car would chirp continuously, but the door would not open. I tried to unlock the car with my key fob, but the car would do the unlock beep 2 times and when I put my hand on the handle it beeped multiple times and did not open. My wife had to open the car from the inside.

The same thing happened today when I was leaving work. I put my hand on the handle and it beeped 5 + times, but the door would not open. I tried using the key fob, but the same symptoms as before…2 unlock beeps followed by multiple beeps when I put my hand on the door handle. I eventually used my key after going through this process for about 2 minutes.

Anyone have any input or experienced this before? The dealership could not replicate it when I brought it in two weeks ago and they told me to video it if it happened again. I have a video, but can not figure out how to upload b/c of an extension issue.

    Thx for your help/input!

Only time I've heard of this it was a failing door actuator and it was on a Prius.

Keep in mind you should be able to open it yourself manually with the actual key inside the fob, if it happens again and your wife isn't there to help :)

I talked with a service advisor today and he said the same thing about the actuator and a Prius...

I did use my key today...that's how I had to get in. Thanks for your reply!

Did you have anything hooked into the 12v power outlet when this happened?

I had the GoPro camera recording while plugged into the power outlet and engine off. I locked the door by touching the spot on the handle. When returned and tried to unlock the door by touching the handle it would not unlock, nor would it unlock by pushing the button on the fob. It took the physical key to get the door unlocked.

Only thing I have plugged in is my USB for my phone...nothing in the 12v.

After several trips to the dealer, the problem was diagnosed as a broken door lock actuator.
