Low RPM shuddering??

18 DCSB Sport. 5k miles. It seems to shudder when rolling at 1100 RPM or so. It seems like the truck wants more throttle, like the RPM is too low. Does anyone else experience this? I know there is a LONG thread about the tranny issues, but this seems like an engine/fuel delivery issue. Any help is appreciated!

 

My new heavy duty URD TORQUE-U flywheel solved that problem.

 

So this is a known issue?

 

Toyota will say it’s normal because they all do it. All 7 of my tacomas have done it since 1994. If you’re willing to do some work, you can make it stop.

The OVTune also helps.

 

How does either affect warranty?

 

Flywheel, probably kills the warranty.

OVTune is completely undetectable by techstream and you can flash back to stock anytime you choose to.

 

OVTune claims it is detonation, thus a timing issue. Some report it goes away with 91 octane but others disagree. I simply give it more pedal when I feel it and the downshift eliminates it. At this point with 28,000+ miles it is mostly reflex bordering on autonomic.

 

I run 93 to fix this issue. Has worked for 33,000 miles so far.

 

I'm 200 miles into a tank of 93 and while it might be a little better, it's still very noticeable.

 

I had this happen once. My first test-drive after getting out of my 6MT GTI. I was all "WTF was that" but it hasn't repeated in 2k miles so I may have changed clutching habits slightly to compensate (for the non-turbo power-band) and not realized it.

 

I still need to try running a few tanks of premium and see if that helps mine. My habit of always saying fill with regular always gets me though.

 

Likely detonation... read this for some details on what OVTune has been working on. Explains the low RPM volatility in these engines (especially when running regular 87)
