05+ DRL (Daytime Running Lights) Install OEM

I know the answer is out there somewhere but I have not been able to find it yet...Do I have daytime running lights??

I have a 2009 4 door TRD Sport. As far as I know I do not have DTRL, there is no DTRL selection on the steering column lever and the amber turn signals are only on when making a turn or switching on the hazard lights.

My headlights however are always on, when the truck is running, regardless of the setting on the steering column lever. I cannot manually turn off my headlights??!!

 

You do not have factory DTRL. The factory DTRL is the front turn signals. Somebody has done an aftermarket DTRL.

 

I bought the truck brand new from the dealership. Is it possible that my headlight selector is broken in the on position?

 

Read through this thread. Since you bought it new, if it's always been this way, I am guessing the dealer wired up a relay to keep the headlights on all the time.

I know this is a super old thread but I was hoping someone could help with this question. I just purchased this mod for my 2010 and plan on installing this week. The headlights I bought are black LED/Halo and I plan on hooking the DRL up to the LED strip (like most newer cars have them). I noticed that with this mod it says the DRLs turn off when the headlights are turned on. Is there a way to wire it so that the DRLs operate as normal when the engine is running, but also remain on when the headlights are turned on? I think it would be weird for the LEDs to be on during the day only, but not at night when the headlights are on (and when they are the brightest and look the sweetest).

If you install a switch to run your drl then you can turn them on whenever you want

 

Well I bought and plan on installing the kit that this thread is based on so I don't have to switch on DRLs (and can have them in general). I just want to be able to keep them on when the headlights are also on, since they are wired to the LEDs, It would look silly if the LEDs in the headlights were not on at night.

 

Well you either install a switch or you can run a jumper wire from the wire that powers the drl circuit to the headlight power wire with a one way diode so when the headlights come on so do the drl

Could it possibly be done with a simple automotive relay? Cut the low beam power wire and connect the wire from the dash (low beam "switch") to terminal 85, and the wire the LEDs/inbound low beam wire to terminal 87. Ground to 86 and battery positive to 30? Not sure how safe/functional splicing the LED and low beam wires would be on the other side of the relay in regards to power supply. But this should keep power going to the LEDs when the low beams are turned on. I guess you could also do it the same way and just wire the LEDs to to both 87 and 87A? Use the dash "switch" power this kit creates into terminal 85. This should keep LEDs on with or without power from the dashl. Either way there would be some splicing together. The whole purpose of having automated DRL (and this kit in the thread) is so you won't have to install an aftermarket switch to turn them on and off. Pretty frustrating this isn't an easy feature to accomplish.

 

Lol all wiring is frustrating. You could run a relay if you wanted to I was just trying to make it more simple for you. Having the switch makes it nice so if you ever didn't want them on, you have that option.

 

Maybe I will just return this OEM conversion kit and wire an OE style push switch to one of the open spots on the dash and do it that way. I really didn't want to worry about remembering to turn them on and off, but it might just be the easiest and aesthetically pleasing way at this point.

I really do hate electrical work...

Any suggestions for a place to buy oe style push switches that don't say something stupid like "Bunny Lights"?

Actually I am starting to thing the easiest way to make the LEDs act as DRL and stay on during low beams is to just tap them directly into an ACC wire that is only active when the engine is on. That should work and makes the most sense. Don't know why I didn't think of that...

Hello, I just bought an 09 Tacoma TRD Sport that does not have DTRL. I have installed Projector headlamps that have LED halos that I would like to have running as the DTRL without the turn signals on. i found this post and was wondering if anyone has any input on if this is possible setting up the DTRL like this post states. Thank you in advance

I saw the kit and would love to install it however I do not want my turn signals on as that is the factory DTRL. My question was with this kit can I cut and splice to have the halos on without the turn signals. right now I have them wired into an ACC slot that is hot all the time when IGN is on. works fine for me but wanting to use that slot for a light bar integrated bull bar in the near future

 

Just did this mod on my '06 Moving to British Columbia from Brooklyn and daytime running lights are a must to import the vehicle. Without 007Tacoma, I would have been struggling and paid quite a bit to get this done.

I was inspired by this DRL thread. I got to thinking the bulb has a high and low filament.

Here is what I did and now the low filament works with the marker lights.

Added pigtails from a Tundra (not sure with year...2008 maybe) has 3 wires instead of just 2 going to the socket...sorry no pics on that. I connected them to the side marker lights.

This is NOT the Daytime Running Light mod and my truck did not have Day Time Running Lights from the factory.

I would suggest if you get the sockets from a salvage yard have them cut off at least 2' of wire. They cut mine 6" short of what I needed and I had to add wire.
