1st Gen Tacoma 12" OSR Outboard Shock Relocation - Outside Frame Rails

Fox 2.0 with LSC adjusters. Part #980-06-034

I'm still not convinced you'd need a 12" shock on a 1st gen without substantial modifications. I took on this job after another individual installed the Alcan leafs so I don't have all of the numbers I would normally like to but he wont even have 12" of vertical travel with his current setup. Easily achievable with proper geometry. @ARCHIVE makes a good point though in saying that articulated travel is different from vertical so only time will tell.

 

I couldnt fit a 2.5x12" smooth body without major cutting

This is with a 35" tire, a wider fj80 axle and not even close to full flex

Yes rubbing is going to happen. Not the end of the world.

That was just a piece of wood resting on top of the frame rails while i had the bed off.

i still see a full leaf pack underneath, are you cycling the suspension before you mount the towers?

 

Negative. The Alcan leafs are voided if i disassemble them. Not ideal

 

Jacking up to put the tires on.
We left about .5" before the shocks were fully extended so limit straps won't be needed.
I believe we got 12" to the base of the bump rubber to the top bump plate.

What Eric said. Wasn't really an option.

We left more like 1" of shock travel before full extension since we had the room to use it. The bottom of the bump pad of the frame to the base of the rubber, where the rubber and the metal pad meet, was only 12". With the degree we mounted the shock, and the fact that his bumps wont compress that far, I am not too concerned with cycling for bottom out. I'll be suprised if he even gets close.

 

Interested to see what your Deavers will do.

If you remove your bump spacer, do you think you will have tire to wheel arch contact?

i don't think so, my tires have never really come close to the fender or the inner wheel well or bed. I'm also only running a 31.8 (when new lol) so that may be part of it as well. My bump spacer is between 1/2 and 3/4", so any difference would be most noticeable at full articulation.

 

Strange, how would they know? Keep a very close eye on those shocks. Do the foxes have little O-rings on the shaft to monitor bump travel? I would do your best to flex it out on a loading ramp or something so you can see what things do before you wheel it hard.

Also keep in mind, with a 12" shock, and a relatively flexy leaf pack, you can definitely get more than an additional inch of down travel, or flex without straps. static droop is deceiving, as the weight of a falling axle, or a flexed axle can over-droop the springs vs just dangling from jack stands. Especially with the mass of a spinning tire. Just things to keep in mind.

It does have a little bump ring at the bottom that moves on the shaft.

Yeah, those things are super flexy. Thats why i wanted to keep a bit more. Worst case i need to re do the bottom brackets and move them up. Again, not ideal, but it is what it is. They are pretty low as is so if i need to move them up that would definitely make me happier. I was initially concerned with hitting them on rocks when crawling. But these things are beefier than my skids so if i hit them, they would probably just stop the truck in its tracks lol.

I'm going to put a camera in the wheel well so i can see exactly whats going on. Going to take it easy. Think i might just fill the bed up with a load to better simulate a camping excursion.

 

I'm not sure how they would know, but it's not my $900 leaf pack to void a warranty on so I'm not willing to risk it. Yes, they have a rubber bump pad that we will move up when he's planning on taking it out. That, along with a little GoPro footage, will give us a much better idea of what needs to be done moving foward.

All things we took into consideration during the install but I do agree it's very difficult to know for sure without cycling. As you stated though, some variables are very difficult to replicate.

How do you like your setup? How did you mount your brackets?

 

Not mounted yet, we cut my old mounts off, cleaned the frame up, and now it's just down to me finding time to get over to King and pick up the parts i need to convert from piggyback to remote res. In the meantime we've mostly wrapped up my bumper build.
