Dang just found this thread! Winter is my favorite time of year to kayak fish, so here in Ohio things can get interesting.

And my favorite game fish on my favorite lure; a 19" and 17" smallie on a Rebel Pop'R at once:

My fishing has slowed down some over the past year and I haven't made it out yet this winter, but once the weather stabilizes and we get a nice weekend it'll be on.

Nice fish man. But that gar would not have a head if it was in the same boat with me. I hate those things.

Dude I thought I had a 23" smallmouth on my line. I have had doubles before but this was on a long cast and they must have tried to go different directions at first because they just stayed on top and didn't budge. I have 8 smallies over 19" in the last 5 years I've been fishing around here, but nothing 20" or over. I wish it had been a 23"er lol.

In the winter when the Ohio River rises the tributaries back up and either backflow or stand still completely, so a lot of fish come in to get out of the current. I have a hardcore striper/hybrid bass fishing buddy I'll get out with who has side scan imaging and can read it like a maestro reads a sheet of music. He'll say "Okay here's a wall of gar; we've gotta fish here and find the hybrids hiding in them." Sure enough cast out and you can feel your lure bouncing off of gar, one after another. Sometimes one will even grab a lure and fighting them in the kayak is a son of a bitch. The first one was a fun experience but after that I prayed not to hook one lol. I'm a smallie fisherman 95% of the time on the smaller rivers in midwest Ohio, but it's fun to get into his world every now and again for some truly large fish.

We catch the gar most of the time on trot lines. When that happens they are "dealt with" outside the boat. I have only hooked one on a rod and reel and thought i had hooked a tire on the bottom. Took forever to get him to the surface. Its was about 4 feet and was pissed off. Luckily with all of his thrashing he came unhooked and we both went about our day.

cool. I never fish much during the cold part of the year but I guess it can be good. Was it a slow retrieve when it hit?

Yep a slow retrieve with a few stops and jerks here and there. When it’s really cold I usually use finesse baits on the bottoms for the smallies. Find a deep eddy that stays slow even in high water events and they’ll be in that winter hole.

Our fishing is through the ice this time of year and I’m not into that. We had a great open water walleye season. Here’s my main fishing partner with a dandy early fall walleye. BB3B825C-63AA-4295-AF24-53FE66B3E058.jpg

Good morning/afternoon from lake of the woods. Fish this morning has been decent. I'll get pictures of the fish tonight before we clean them.
