4x4 Recommendations around Reno

Hey all. I recently bought myself a new TRD Off Road and I'd like to get into trail riding and overlanding soon. I've been living in Reno since '04, so I like to think I know my way around. The only issue is that I am not familiar with any trails. As of right now my Taco is all stock, and it will probably be about a year or so until I am able to make any changes. I am willing to drive an hour or so if the trails are worth it. Thanks!

 

Peavine, Dog Valley and Hunter Creek areas are your best bet for a stock truck. Plenty of trails to keep you busy for a long time. All of them are 5-10 minutes from Reno.

Dog Valley is nice because you can drive all the way back to CA including Stampede and Boca lakes and then even hit the hwy 89 area.

Great recommendations from nvnv. All of those options are basically right in town and while you can get fairly remote (especially Dog Valley/Henness Pass area), all are well-traveled and mostly in cell range, making them good options to test your skills and truck's limits without becoming a statistic. Beware of the bentonite clay on Peavine in mud season and only explore those trails when it's dry (or frozen) - your Wranglers will quickly find their limits in the mud.

Also, you'll find the 4x4 trails off Hunter Lake road off Caughlin Ranch (Hunter Creek trail is hiking-only access to Mt. Rose Wilderness). There's some fun and challenging stuff up there; make sure to air down.

Pick yourself up a Benchmark Atlas for CA and NV, start googling and have fun! Don't forget your recovery gear and GPS.

 

second hunter lake. Prison hill in Carson is also a fun OHV area. Also pick up this book: https://trackandtrailpublications.com/publications/hs1/ It has a handful of trails right near reno, as well as a bunch of stuff all along the eastern sierra.

another vote for behind caughlin, very nice area. make sure you have basic toolkit, air up/down tools and maybe a tow strap. it's good to go prepared ya know? Few months back I yanked a dude out of a creek. shit happens.
