Slap a couple of 4X4 emblems on it and 4X4 decal and bring it back to the dealership or private party!

Turn the bad boy into a low rider with hydraulics. That way you can pop it up offroad and jump it out of pits. Problem solved!!

I don’t think this applies to something you take a loan out on. It’s more like buy once, cry 60-72 times.

I just want to say how amazed and proud of my TW brothers and sisters that this thread didn't turn into a dumpster fire. OP is still here, and we have added to the community.

    I need a minute...this has me

Just remember man. You still got a capable truck. Still so fun shit with it. And if you really try with it and you conquer some rough trails with the 4x2 you’ll feel way more accomplished than any 4x4 has. Think of it as a challenge. I know it’s just me preaching the choir at this point but it’s a Tacoma and it’s capable. It’s like most people told me when I first joined. Pick your line, play it smart, and momentum is your friend.

Alex, welcome to TW. Good attitude, you’ll do well here. Your “mistake” could have been much worse, you did acquire one of the best vehicles made today.

I cried every time I had to paid the loan. I got a bare bones truck, only spent $25k out the door and still was into it for $450/mo (financed the whole amount for 60mo. at 0.9%APR). I can't imagine how much a $45k truck is. I know it's a lot more than I can afford.

I recently upgraded from a 2007 DCSB TRD OR 2WD, so they do exist. I had that taco for almost 10 years and it was a great ride. I was fine in snow without chains as long as it wasnt too steep of a grade or if it wasnt higher than a foot. I was also able to do some *minor* off roading with it (Titus canyon in Death Valley for example). Despite it being a great truck, 2 weeks ago I decided to upgrade to a 2019 DCLB TRD OR 4WD and couldnt be happier. Sounds like I have similar packages to you (Premium and Tech), and I paid only a few grad more.
You've got a great truck, but I know I upgraded mainly for the 4WD (and the long bed).

You shouldn't have paid over 40K for that truck either.

I'm in the outcasted minority, I prefer 2WD. It gets me off pavement "just far enough," I like to explore the fire roads and beaches and I do camp out in the national forests, but If I want to do serious trail work I'll use something that's not my daily driver. My first truck was a 4x4, the three trucks after were not. I got tired of changing hubs, bearings and other wear and tear expenses.

Tangental story: The first time I was really behind the wheel on a mud trail was when that 4x4 had 300 miles on the clock, first of 36 payments was due in five days. I immediately high centered in some soft ruts. My first instinct was to yell POWER! and put the hammer foot down (this was before I was aware of the existence of Jeremy Clarkson, but somehow he has always been my spirit animal.) Less than one minute later, the tranny and transfer had both burned through their seals, Trans fluid had suddenly liberated itself from the vehicle, mud and swamp water were now in charge of lubricating the shift bands. It was a very humbling experience as I dialed AAA on my new motorola flip-phone, only to listen to them laugh and say "we dont dispatch tow trucks out there. Find a farmer to drag you to the nearest paved road then call us back." I wound up driving that truck for 8 years, but the trans always seemed to have the occasional gremlin after that. Whenever it slipped out of gear when trying to find OD, that was the truck giving me a little reminder "hey asshole, remember 5 years ago?"

My opinion is to keep the 4x2 and buy a beater for dedicated play.

OK, I laughed out loud right there.

Anyway OP, you have a Pre-Runner I guess, which are cool as well IMO. You just need to drive it with that in mind, doesn't mean you can't still go off-road. Lighter and no CV's up front for that LT suspension.
