My 2017 Sr 2.7 manual reminds me of my 1989 Toyota 4x4 pick up (pre Tacoma) I bought new. The 89 was a great little rig and the 2017 is perfect for how I use it.

Let’s all take another moment and bask in the glory. The iron block. The larger displacement. The longer stroke. The “assembled in Japan”. The lack of a high pressure fuel pump. The spin on filters... classic. That large 8.75 rear diff. Ah... the global engine.

It's true, low load = intake VVT retard. It's not like a switch as you describe, according to the only guy outside Toyota engineering that actually knows what's going on in the ECM calibration - Mat Wilson (OVtune).

Your numbers are fiction however, lol. Nobody actually knows that on here, and I highly doubt you're ever going to see a dyno pull that starts at what - 1000 RPM?

Anyway, it's possible to change cylinder filling and thus compression ratio to a varying degree - Mat is working on that for 1.05 release. One of the benefits is to increase engine braking, a pet peeve of many M/T owners.

Anyway, back to your 4 banger love in.

    :)

Had the '83 22R and '94 22RE, no way I was going to get a modern V6 with how those classic 4 banger MT's treated me.

Coming from the uber complicated Jetta TDI, and having wear issues even though the emissions systems were not fully active ... it was time to get back to a simpler machine while I still could.

Glad I did, because I ended up getting the last year for the 7513 trim.

    I am 59 and plan on keeping my 2017 2.7 4x4 5 speed till I pass.
My only complaint is the whine at 60 mph....

I have the same vehicle. It had the same whine until I applied Fluid Film to the undercarriage. The tone of the whine has changed and it is barely noticeable. It might just be a coincidence.

I went with my 2.7 because it was the only used one on the lot at the time... now looking back at it I would much rather have a 4 cylinder than be the awkward middle sibling V6.

I as getting gas this summer in my 2015 2 WD 2.7 manual and there was an older black Tacoma 2WD ahead getting gas also. It had a stainless steel tank in the box and it looked like it was in Desert Storm. The bumper was curled and tailgate and most panels were dented and scratched. I asked the driver, how many miles on the truck and he replied this is the new one. It has only 380K but his old one has over 600K. He explained, he gets lobsters from the east coast and brings them to Ontario, Canada for resale. He tows another small tank behind and his son has the older Tacoma which he does as well on a regular basis. He says they are easy to service by him once a month (oil change, tire pressures etc,) and oil sprayed once a year (listen to this advice in salt areas as you will never need a frame replacement if it does not rust and you won't have to continually complain to Toyota- this is a maintenance item) and the most reliable trucks he has had. No major work ever done on drivetrain He looked at mine and asked how MPG was with the manual trans because his was auto. Both of us were very pleased with mileage and he told me to look after it as it will probably outlast me. This is probably the reason why people go with the 2.7 if they keep a vehicle a long time and why dealers don't like selling them. I don't know if this still the case but dealers didn't like getting them in as profit margin is minimal and get hardly any service out of these too reliable trucks.

I got the Atkinson numbers from an older fella in here that I don’t see posting anymore, and it was an estimation IIRC. I believe them to be ballparked, and for illustration purposes, suitable. The real issue here is what happened to that poster... I suspect he may have passed.

You could get in on the love in. We don’t have rev hang.

Dumb question, but isnt Atkinson just intake AND exhaust variable timing?

It’s not a dumb question. VVTI would be your timing.

The simulated Atkinson cycle, the emphasis isn’t on WHEN your valves open and close so much as how long they stay open, reducing your compression, which is why the v6 will get better fuel efficiency, but will obviously sacrifice power... You won’t get both in that scenario.

The new 2.7 has dual VVTI

    No atkinson tomfoolery
