What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

They say 90-110k... I say you can probably double that but just watch your temp & fluid.

I put tap water in the radiator last year during a hurricane @ 150k. I suspect that caused my WP bearing to start to make noise & weep a lil, or I could have gone another year... But with the non-interference & ability to easily inspect it, theTB was a secondary concern for me.

The bearings? I ordered them for my Kings from Wheeler's, these guys - After I ordered, they called me and recommended I get some new snap rings too, which I did. I still need to get new misalignment spacers though. You might not need new ones but mine won't come off easily and I'll probably screw them up prying them out. They're cheap and good to have new ones anyway.

 

yeah lube always made mine louder. Once the lube went away its fine. I just wash them now. Works way better.

 

The stretch is another factor you aren't considering. Because of the 2:1 ratio of crank and cam rotations you can throw the thing off by more than a few degrees letting it go too long. It'll fall out of sync either enough to fuck with how the computer percieves the timing (since ignition is triggered by the cam sensor wheel) or enough to just skew peak performance if the computer doesn't get angry

I hit the pressure washer place on the way home after my last trip and a few days later again. that's when it got bad. We went thru some nasty mud on the last trip

 

for me, my bearings get the loudest after I hit them with a pressure washer to clean all the dirt out. Once I spray some Tri Flo in them they get quiet again for a week or so. Been repeating that process for awhile now, I keep putting off replacing them but it's getting to where I think I should prioritize it.

hence why I'm always paranoid about clunks and squeaks despite there being normal race truck noises, lol

sometimes owning these trucks is like an exercise in maintaining one's sanity in the face of constant adversity

 

I mean, regular maintenance of these things goes a long ways.

And the radio volume knob only helps for a while.

 

I told my dad about all my squeaks and rattles. He said to forget investing in suspension and invest in a quality stereo instead. Aside from trying to fix the leaf squeak one more time, Im gonna take that advice.

 

yeah I gave up on squeak-less leaf springs a long time ago, especially if you play in the dirt they're always going to be making some kind of noise. If they clunk or pop that's when I'd worry, dealt with that before.
