    About all of them have rust with varying degrees of severity.

    OK, made in Japan in the 50's.

    The lugs haven't been mounted, these are brand new. Just curious as to why they would have rust already. May have to send back to ICB.

    Oh hey there....a thread about Ray's rusty nuts?

    Slap those nuts on a second gen.....they'll blend in with the frame....

    ....or you can gently clean those nuts, working in all the little nooks and crannies. A little assembly lube or anti seize goes a long way....get them nice and greased up.

    I prefer to work a pair of them at a time in one hand, carefully fondling them and moving them back and forth.

    I was just messing around. Any exposed steel will rust. It is normal and prob will never have problem. You should be rotating your tires every 5k, so having them seize is really hard to do as your are removing them on a somewhat frequent basis.

    If it is really a huge concern to you; use a very little bit of anti-seize. People will debate this but I think as long as you are torquing to spec and rechecking after 100 miles or so you should be fine. I do not do this on wheel studs myself but if it was a bother to me I would. Now if you are using a impact gun and smashing them on..you may have other issues.

    I bought the same lugs from ICB. TBH haven't fully inspected them I just screwed them on like how they were supposed to be used. Is all the lugs rusty or just a few? I believe they are sold for 5 lug pattern but ICB does offer them for 6 bolt patterns for the 4x4 guys (me) It's possible the 4 other lugs got exposed and gotten rusty? Mines came in the Rays pack of 20 (16 lugs + 4 locking lugs) while the other 4 lugs were individually wrapped (actually wrapped pretty good) I'm thinking it's just the 4?

    Mine was packaged the same. All of them have rust unfortunately. The ones that weren't packaged in the box are worse.

    Wow how unfortunate. I just slapped mines on last week. I do run anti seize so I'm not concerned at this point. I'd try contacting ICB and get a exchange or refund. I'll be ordering another set soon when my other set of Volks come in. I'll be sure to inspect them better. Good luck OP \m/

    Coat in anti seize before installation as you should and move on....

    Please don't do this. When you are measuring torque you are inferring clamping pressure by measuring the sliding friction between the nut and stud. If you put any lubricant/grease/anti-seize on the threads you drastically lower the sliding friction resulting in an over tightened lug nut even though you torqued them. This can result in breaking studs and wheel damage.

    The proper steel to make a good quality lug-nut out of will rust. Stainless Steel is brittle when compared to rust-prone Carbon Steel grades. If the nuts oxidize it’s likely a sign of quality.

    Yep don't lube your nuts.... you will over torque them every time, look it up, google is your friend
    ps don't sweat the little surface rust, that can happen in only a few days.

    When a bolt is lubricated - less torque is required to achieve bolt axial load or tension. Reduction of torques for lubricated vs. dry bolts are indicated in the table below.

    Lubricant Torque Reduction
    (%)

    No lube 0
    Graphite 50 - 55
    White Grease 35 - 45
    SAE 30 oil 35 - 45
    SAE 40 oil 30 - 40
    Example - Reduction of Torque when Bolt is Lubricated
    The maximum tightening torque for a slightly lubricated 1" Grade 5 coarse bolt is 483 lb ft. Dry bolt torque is approximately 30% higher - or 628 lb ft.

    Tdry = (483 lb ft) (1 + (30%) / (100%))

    = 628 lb ft

    If the bolt is lubricated with SAE 30 oil - the torque compared to a dry bolt is reduced with approximately 40%.

    TSAE30 = (628 lb ft) (1 - (40%) / (100%))

    = 377 lb ft

    Note that if torque specified for a dry or slightly oiled bolt torque is applied to a lubricated bolt - the bolt may overload and break.

    I did and looked at them when in for wheels but never liked the pattern.
