Oh no... off to the Taco meadows? Darn.

    No hang ups eh?

Well, I suspect you do have rev hang to a certain extent. It's there for emissions or some garbage. Been around for quite a while in all makes.

It's annoying on the V6 though.

I’ve heard it was annoying. But there is no perceivable (to me) rev hang between the 01 and 17. And that’s the key. Perceivable. If I don’t know it’s there, it’s not lagging long enough to affect my shifts.

And I don’t know! The fella used to allude to being old as fuck, and posted all the time. Wish I could remember his name, had a white truck under a canopy in his av, possibly a 2nd gen

    Yep.

In fact, when in "Atkinson mode" (low load) the intake valves stay open just a bit after the piston starts to come up on the compression stroke - pushing some charge air back out into the intake manifold (lowering compression). Good for efficiency.
Now, when you need power, the intake valve timing starts to advance and at a certain point you'll be in full Otto mode (11.8:1 compression). Where and when that happens, I don't know.
The exhaust VVT is obviously manipulated too, don't know shit about that.
The major difference (as I understand it) between the dual VVTI on the 2.7 and what the 3.5 uses is - there's obviously a wider possible range of intake valve timing. Hence the term VVTI-W (wide).

Anyway, Mat is continuing to tinker with all this stuff.

Wish Toyota still made the reg cab with the 2.7, 5MT, 4x4. That would have been my new truck.
    Edit: and manual TC.
2nd edit: 6MT would be even better.

Wen't 2.7L for the 20+ combined MPGs that I get and to have a M/T.

I like to say it that "my truck does everything that I ask of it, just a little slower"

Could be wrong, but I think Toyota has been making this engine since 1989 or something.

I figure after all those production years it's got to be perfected by now.

I don't get near that with my reg cab 4x4 but I have 285 KM2s. I am happy with the 17+mpg I do get though! I think if I do nothing but highway I can get 18-19 still which is awesome.

Love my little truck, I never really feel it is under-powered especially with the m/t, just gotta get the rpms up and be in the right gear. I feel like this thing will last me a long time!

Toyota has embraced Deming and Lean production for awhile, meaning don't re-design as often as the Big 3 redesigns, and you wont have as many issues, along with the first QA process in Automotive Manufacturing. This results in Toyota to lead in quality and dependability, not so much on performance. 22RE was a great engine.
    Direct injection too! I think.

Too bad the 2.7L didnt have a 6-spd manual, why I went auto, just for the six speed.

Same. I got lucky, I was originally waiting for the 17 pro, dead set on it actually, when I started looking at the other configs. Absolutely did not want 4 doors, so that was bumming me out about the pro. I also didn’t like the engine/trans combo... but I was still gonna do it, until a 2.7 4x4 5spd access cab popped up. I loved everything about this engine and it’s evolution/history, came in access cab, and was a 4x4 manual. That, with the fact that all factory suspension is eventually going to be replaced with rebuildable coilovers... it was a no brainer. These trucks are all the same in that all the differences are bolt on (‘cept the skewp) At first I didn’t like the beard, but that’s become the coolest part, it adds dimension to the front end, gives the impression of a proper bumper. After a few basic mods, I was way more stoked on this, and even more so when the realization set in that these weren’t going to be made anymore, at least for the foreseeable future. And that’s important to me. The tradition of the 4x4 5spd Toyota pickup (sport rally 5) is a legendary one, one I grew up in, and given the option for any config, I’d choose this one all day. It’s super fun.

Oh, and 10-14k less. Shocking really.

Sit on that idea for awhile, and keep your eyes open. You’ll be able to snatch a used ‘17 I4 4x4 manual for cheap (relative)... since the general public finds them very undesirable. I don’t blame them, driving one is not a luxury, like the recent trend of truck driving has become. It’s more like operating a tool.

No rev hang with my 2017 5 speed MT. Just pure linear response to throttle operation.7A729792-A7A3-4010-930D-1B0B808F0C34.jpg

Proven reliability was the main reason, 'utility pack' pricing sealed the deal for me.

I owned a '15 jeep JK base model, coincidentally w/a nearly identical out-the-door price as my tacoma, but sold it after a year due to it's crazy resale value.
I was looking for an inexpensive off-road capable vehicle (skid plates, low-range, ground clearance etc), the tacoma was the perfect match.

Nearly 50k miles later, still loving it.

I got the 2.7 because of the reliability and at the time it was in my price range. No regrets. Gets me where i need to go and hasnt been able to go anywhere i didnt want to go.

And its fast enough to get me a fucking ticket too.

I've been searching Cars dot com for quite some time trying to find one in my area. I found a black one about 400 miles away on a Toyota lot with 9,000 miles on it. Hell, they wanted $26,500 for it and were not open to negotiation. "haggle free pricing"....ha ha ha ha!

The wife keeps asking me why I would go backwards in life from a paid off TRD Sport to an SR.

Maybe I keep the Sport and get a second truck, the SR MT?!

I just like the looks with no fender flares and the simplicity.

    Oh well.
