I’ve run 285/75R16 tires on my Tacoma for 2 years now. I find myself wanting to size down instead of the traditional size up.

I know that 285’s totally change the look of the truck, BUT I lose 100 miles of fuel on a full tank compared to stock. I don’t want to go back to that size, but I am considering going to the same tire in the 265/75R16 size.

No need to flame. I’m just wondering WHY so many run the 285’s. Is it primarily for looks?

Smaller because trans wont like the bigger tires. You'll prob need to regear to get some normal driving back

I went 265/75/16s on my pro for mileage.
, Less wear and tear, and it tows better with 265s. 285s look amazing now doubt, but the mileage and power loss wasn’t worth it to me.

I get to change sizes for free due to 30 day ride guarantee. I wasn’t expecting so much love for 265’s! And the KM3’s in general are heavy as well.

Just put 265’s on mine a few weeks back after my factory 245’s finally needed replaced and with an upcoming hunting trip up north, I wanted to be prepared, but lost about 2 mpg but love the look and ride compared to the 245’s.

i run E range tires only, and i get them in the stock size, in my case 265/65-17. i love the handling and drive with E's, and when you get them in a smaller/stock size on a light truck like ours, it exaggerates the firmness of E tires quite a bit which i also like. in other words, i like the truck's handling and performance and don't want to lose any of it to excessively large or mushy tires. large size does look really good on the truck but it's not even on my list of what I'm trying to get out of it, so I'll need staying with stockish size.

yeah, they aren't light, and my MPG shows...but they're so much fun in some sloppy mud. Found my self keeping it in 2wd a number of times just to see how they would do.

I noticed this a lot with my buddies Duratrac's. He has the stock 265/70-16, I have E 265/75/16 KM3's. Looking at his tires while we were running some trails, it was nuts how much squish was in them at 31psi. He looked aired down coming over some rocks. I would have had to aired down to low 20s or lower to see that kind of squish.

You have any pics of your ride? I’m curious what the 265’s look like.

    Neither. I upgraded from 245/75-16 to 265/65-17.

Height stayed about the same, but I went an inch wider.

Some do 285's for looks. Some do it for function.

You need to do what makes you happy. If you want fuel economy, go back to 265's.

If you want bigger tires, better looks, better traction in soft (sand, deep snow) do 285's.

With the 285, you only get an additional 3/4" rise on the rear axle compared to 265/75R16. Considering the lift you'll likely need to fit them and worsened road performance, I don't see the real benefit. But they do look sweet as hell on the Tacoma. You might want to consider 255/75R17s if you're willing to change wheels. Pay for them with all of the saved gas money.
